HAPPY NEW YEAR ~ TRADITIONS OR SUPERSTITIONS ??

Today is the last day of 2008!!  Tonight many will be celebrating the close of this tumultuous year! Some can't wait to ring out the old and bring in the new.  Others feel reflective about changes they have made (maybe even forced to make) in new directions that are turning out to be good and profitable choices.

Champagne sales are down but that doesn't mean there won't be substitutes to celebrate! We love to celebrate in Austin!!

In Texas we believe we must eat a healthy serving of black-eyed peas to have a prosperous New Year.

The stores are already re-stocking to make sure everyone gets their fix.  Everyone has their own recipe: black-eyed peas with jalapenos, with bacon - you name it!

It doesn't matter how you make them, just eat some or you will have a dismal 2009!

Follow a tradition from Italy: eat a grape for each month - pop them in your mouth at midnight .. one by one until you have eaten 12!

Whatever your tradition or superstition make sure you follow it as we will need everything we can to get us back on top again!  And, I'm a firm believer we can do it!!

I've never heard of the grape tradition. I have heard of the black-eyed peas but I've never done it. I actually believe that each minute is the start of a new hour, a new day, a new week, a new month, and a new year -- the start of the rest of my life. Therefore I don't need to do anything different from the day before just because a different digit is on the calendar. Why let a calendar that someone created centuries ago run my life?

Best wishes for health, happiness, peace, and prosperity.

Russel: I can see your point. We tend to make those black eyed peas for New Years Day to carry on a family tradition. My husband Gene makes his great grandmothers recipe (and they are good) every year.  I think Gene thinks fondly of the days he was growing up making sure he got his "fix" on New Years Day. Therefore he likes to carve out time to conjure up those memories!

I never thought I'd find an orphan here.  Dorie, you are such a joy!  Thank you so very much for all you do. Have a great weekend.  I read your foodie post, but there were so many comments already and I wanted to give you some points!
