Goodbye 2008, Hello 2009

2008 has been another great year for me personally. While describing some of my personal achievements, I'd like to share with you some lessons I have learnt along the way and if you wish, you could apply them in your life too.

In my business, 2008 is my best year yet, in terms of profits and number of transactions although I still didn't meet my goals when I had set them before we rolled in 2008. Most of my 2008 income came from blogging on Active Rain and it was something I did not expect. So, it is a sweet surprise.

As a blogger, I do feel that I am writing better blogs, and through that, have gained more audience, participation and subscribers. Again, this was unexpected before 2008 began. There are so many more friends from different parts of the country now. I get so excited just thinking about it.

In my personal life, and especially playing the Mama role to my now 15-month son, I can finally say that it is getting easier (after 14 months). The first 4 months of his young life was the most difficult. He had colic and doubts of gassiness, indigestion to make matters worse. So, it caused more attention to the baby that Mama could ever imagine. On top of that, with him being a light sleeper didn't help. He yelled and screamed his head off whenever he rode in cars to what seems forever. At one point, child-nurturing became down right scary for me. Not having enough sleep can certainly do some damages and for 14 months, the longest one stretch of sleep I ever had was 3 hours. Oh boy did I miss sleeping! Most of 2008 was challenging for me as I transition into the Mama's role. But celebrate with me as he finally slept through the night, 14 months later. This is by far my biggest accomplishment in 2008. Within a few weeks of sleeping through the night, he started walking and now I just feel like he IS a little boy, no longer the infant I cared for, for the longest time.

Even though there are some personal goals (numbers and transactions) I didn't achieve, I still have alot to celebrate about. My conversion leads to take people I didn't know, built a relationship and then went on to collect a paycheck was small victories I have to acknowledge. I am slowly overcoming my phone phobia through my new focus. Read about it here, Prioritizing from my death bed. I choose to see 2008 with a positive ending note.

Obama's victory showed that when so many odds are against him, he rose on the occasion. Obama is not anymore special than I am. If he can, I can too!

2008 will go down in the books for some challenging economic downturns. But instead of looking at it in a bad way, I glad that many people are now going back to the basics of saving first, before spending (a hot button for me). Many decided not to shop till they drop for Christmas - another good sign that we are coming back around. Gas came back down to less than $1.75/gal and my wallet at the gas pump is also happier.

What if you didn't achieve some specific goals for 2008? Could you find other positives and smaller victories to celebrate? I'm pretty sure despite how 2008 looked, you have lots to celebrate about. Choose to see the glass half full. It's your decision. I know that's how I plan to close out 2008. Tearing myself down will do me no good, but instead celebrate the little sweet surprises that happened along the way.

Lots to celebrate about 2008 and more to look forward to in 2009 as I wrap up my last post on Active Rain. Happy New Year 2009. Together, we can make a prosperous 2009.

I plan to make FIREWORKS in 2009. Will you join me?

Happy New Year. Let's make it a Fireworks Year in 2009

Sounds like a plan!  Why give up on goals not met, you are probably closer to the end mark than if you didnt list it as a goal....Happy New Year!

Hi Loreena...It was certainly a struggle for you but hopefully the lack of sleep at least is behind you.

Like everything else, we have an image of what motherhood is going to be like and sometimes reality is a bit of a shock.

I was not a REALTOR when my children were young so I must applaud you and the others that manage to combine all of these roles.  Do not be hard on yourself.  I am glad to see you appreciating and savoring your victories.

You will continue to have many more.

Kate

Hi Loreena... Happy New Year!  The pics of Meng are adorable (as usual)!  One of my favorite things about 2008 has been the growth of the relationships I have formed here on A|R (including ours) and hope that in 2009 they will only continue to strengthen and grow.

Pat - That's how I look at it too.

Gary - If you had asked me the first 4 months, I wouldn't have know if it's worthwhile. But now when he can respond so much better, I'd say Yes, yes, yes. I'm beginning to enjoy him a little more.

Hi Loreena -- let me add to the chorus and celebrate your year and your son -- maybe your son could meet my granddaughter?  It was so refreshing to read your "from the heart" recap of 2008, written in the spirit of hopefulness for 2009, with sincere appreciation for the good God has brought to you, I think, in return for your faithfulness.  God bless you!

Loreena,

Having a healthy happy baby boy is a huge accomplishment. I loved the little video you posted of him. I'm also glad you are now getting some sleep. Sometimes that's hard to come by in the early months of their lives. Fortunately for us, all ours were pretty good sleepers. I agree with a comment above, I love your positive outlook. Having raised three kids (youngest just turned 20) I'll be in prayer for you when the little guy becomes a teen!!! So much trouble out there. I'm encouraged to read your philosophy in raising him. You're laying a good foundation. Have a great 2009!

Maria - I think our skies will look as beautiful as the displays in the night skies.

Terry - We should let both of them meet someday. LOL. Thank you for understanding my heart. You are a true friend.

Larry - I want to thank you for your support throughout the year. It has been great to have a friend like you.

Great pictures Loreena!  2008 was not as big as I would have wished.  However, I made many good decisions and changes that will benefit me in 2009.  I applaud your success in 2008 and wish you nothing but MORE success in 2009 - both personally and professionally.
