Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year. This is my first blog on Active Rain from Dec 2006. Looking back New Orleans has been through more than most would ever want to go through. The housing downturn is not nice but the Katrina aftermath was an unbelivable experience.

We can end up a better place in the end. What a life changing experience and thanks for all the thoughts and prayers we have received since August 29,2005. Of course the damage is still here for everyone to see and feel. But its looking up!  Blogging was a great escape from the devastion.

New Orleans, Thanks Realtors

It was great to have the NAR in New Orleans last month and wanted to share some of the things realtors did with their time and money. We may be at the bottom of some of these lists form the general publics view, but when it comes to giving, time, and self sacriface we are at the tops. The media just might not notice. I remeber after   9-11 our ofice took time out to raise money by dressing up in flags ect one afternoon in front of our office. We easily collected over 10k in several hours.

After Katrina agents nationwide took time to collect. Kudos to Keller Williams who sent each agent thousands of dollars and were adopted by an office. I am with Prudential and have seen some comments about the Keller Williams family style atmosphere but when it counted they came through for a lot of agents that lost what they had. In my life I will remember that and say only positive things about other companies. The main point was to say thanks and pass this e-mail on the Active Rain family. Thanks Eric

"Realtors really outdid themselves at the VOLUNTEER DAYS -- more than 2,000 attendees put in 8,364 hours of volunteer work.  Because of their efforts...
☺ The New Orleans Public Library will open 3 months earlier than expected.
☺ The children at St. Joan of Arc School can learn on the 20 computers you set up, along with the books you secured from other closed schools, and will enjoy a new blacktop play area.
☺ 535 Students from De La Salle School have a fresh, newly painted environment in which to learn.
☺ Seven new homes are framed and many more new homes have siding, roofing and porches thanks to your work in the Musicians Village with Habitat for Humanity.
☺ Four homes that were damaged in Katrina are now painted for their elderly owners...and these signs of renewal are encouraging others to return and rebuild in the St. Roch neighborhood.
☺ $100 of nutritious food was provided for every Realtor volunteer hour spend at the Second Harvest Food Bank.
☺ and more residents will be able to enjoy City Park and the Botanical Gardens.  Plus, the Park has $15,000 in new equipment they can continue to use."

Lets not forget the Mississippi Gulf Coast where I saved these photos from one of their local papers. Really some unbelieveable sites, take time to view

Eric Happy New Years.  Really bring's back the memories.  Hard to believe it's been over three years now.  I hope we don't see something like that in our lifetimes again.

I still find it astounding that some of the neighborhoods like Lakeview, Gentilly, and New Orleans East still have very few people living in them. I still think that the idea of a smaller footprint was a great idea despite how unpopular it was.

Listening to your Needs

It was always a good and senseable idea. Politically it was not popular and would have been preceived as racial in nature. New Orleans was 60% renters and few of the landlords would want to build back. Take the money and run was the common sense thing to do.

Nagin needed to get re elected and be popular with the black community.  Money and common sense will now begin to be the rule. People vote with their feet in the end.
