The Expedition of Lewis & Clark in Montana
In 1804 Thomas Jefferson sent Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to find the River of the West, the Northwest Passage, an all-water route connecting the trade routes from the Pacific to the Atlantic Oceans. The expedition entered the land of the Blackfeet, which was to become Montana.
Today, much of this landscape remains unchanged from the time of Lewis and Clark's crossing. There are scores of landmarks related to the expedition.
