Each year about this time, the City of Tampa is invaded by pirates led by their captain, Jose Gaspar. Upon landing, they take over city hall and capture the mayor. Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla makes the day an unforgettable one for all of the participants and observers. This festival is unique to our area and always reminded me a bit of a mini-Mardi Gras. It is always a lot of fun and enjoyed by all. This year it will take place on Saturday, February 7th.
Some of the planned activities are:
- The pirate ship invasion of Tampa starting at 11:30 AM. They will land at the Convention Center and spectators can watch from several vantage points around the downtown area.
- Gasparilla Invasion Brunch that will take place at the Convention Center (a great place to watch the festivities). Reservations are required.
- Gasparilla Parade of Pirates - 2:00 PM to 5:30 PM. The parade will begin at the intersection of Bayshore Boulevard and Bay-to-Bay Boulevard, and then move on to the downtown area. You can reserve bleacher seats along the way for an even better view.
- All during the day, up until 11 PM, there will be a Pirate Fest along Florida Avenue, from Channelside to Kennedy Boulevard.
Needless there is a lot to do, and it is not necessary to spend a fortune to have a very good time. So put on your eye patch, grab your sword and get ready to pillage! Enjoy!
