Using the Internet to meet people face to face

Okay, so you are a member of LinkedIn, Facebook, AR, or some other Social Networking site.  These are all great for connecting with people and building relationships online.  Want to take that to the next level?  How about using the internet to meet people face to face!

Meetup Social NetworkingI recently discovered a new online service called Meetup.com.  Meetup can help you find, join, and create groups consisting of people with similar interests, within the same geographical area as you.  Meetup is different in that their whole premise is to get people to meet face to face, but they are using the internet as a way to connect people with similar interests.  Groups range from small breed dog owners, to book clubs, to sports fans, stay at home moms, and real estate investors.  Groups also range in membership size from 1 to several thousand.  (Of course the group of one is not really experiencing the opportunity to meet people face to face).

How does this work, you ask? You basically go to their site and search for a group you may be interested in within your zip code.  Once you find a group, you simply join (most groups are completely free), and then you can attend any of the Meetups they have scheduled.  If you don't want to attend a Meetup, you don't have to.  If you don't see a group you are interested in, you can always create your own!

How can this help your business, you ask?  Well, it provides you an opportunity to meet people with similar interests as you.  Right away you will have something in common.  It provides you an opportunity to create your own group and be the group organizer.  This has the potential to put your face in front of many new people who will eventually want to know what you do for a living!  Now this is a real opportunity to use the internet to connect with people face to face.

Troy - I do feel that sometimes we think business far too often. How about meeting people with no strings attached? Sometimes I like that for a change. Just be friends. You know what I do. Call me if you need help. I understand that there are different thoughts, but sometimes I'm tired about all these networking stuff. I meet friends because I enjoy meeting people.

Hi Troy,

Sounds as though you have found this very useful.  I wish you the best.  I appreciate how I can feel almost as though I HAVE met many of the AR members, even though we have only held conversations via internet.  Maybe they feel more secure to express their true feelings via Internet rather than face to face.  Enjoy your new method and we'll keep plugging alone (joyfully) with the tried and true method of previous years.

Hi Troy.

I think we have numerous different options so there will always be something for everyone.  I prefer the Internet to the face to face.  Reasons, lack of time, flexible time (it is now almost 11:00 PM).  I have found it easy to become acquainted to AR members.

Great idea for meetup groups.  I hadn't consider using the site in that manner.

Joetta - Not only a good way to expand your sphere, but a fun way to meet people who have similar interests.

Sarah - Glad to hear you have connected with some good friends.  The best part about Meetup is that the people are all local.

Pam - Yeah, it's really a simple idea, and the site is very user friendly.

Loreena - I think you are missing my point.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with meeting people with no strings attached.  The point with Meetup is that you are meeting people who have similar interests as you, whether it be bingo, or going to the movies, or riding jet ski's, and they are all local, so you can actually get to know them in person.  If this is not for you, then that is okay with me.

Derenda - I may be missing your point.  Are you becoming acquainted with AR members who are not in the real estate industry, and are you developing new friendships and business from these AR members?  That is what I envision Meetup can do if used properly.  It is an opportunity for you to meet local people in your community who have similar interests/hobbies.  You can start doing things together face to face.  I enjoy getting to know people in person, even though it may be more time consuming.

Mike - You don't even have to consider using the site in any manner.  It will just naturally occur.  You find a Meetup group you like, join it for free, attend a Meetup of your choice, and get to know people who have similar interests.  Next thing you know, they will be asking you what you do for a living.  That's the beauty of the whole thing, the simplicity of it all.  You get to do something you like, meet new people, and tell them you are in Real Estate.

Jason - I think it is a great concept, getting people back together face to face.  I just wish I had thought of it, ha, ha :)

Thanks for sharing meetup.  I have not heard of this before, but I have been trying to find a new method for actually connecting with people who I am "meeting" online.  This seems like a great way to meet people who actually have the same interests!

Thanks again,

Mike
