Two Good Guys (Amazing Men) - Part 1

It is hard to imagine an entire year has passed already since my husband and I lost our fathers.  We lost both of them within less than 36 hours of each other.  They were both such "great guys" too.  Both alike in so many ways; so much in common, even though they had never known each other until after meeting just before my husband and I were married.  They were products of the same era.  Both liked to hunt and fish.  They "loved" to dance, and enjoyed listening to country music. They both worked for and retired from CDOT.  Both were married a lifetime to their best friend and role models for their families.  Both had a sense of humor and liked to share a nip of whiskey. Both were generous with their time and affection. Both were natives of Colorado. Both liked wearing a pair of comfortable blue jeans, a western shirt and a pair of good boots. Both died in January of 2008 and both had "Danny Boy" sung at their funeral.

My husband's father, Houston Hezekiah "Bud" Slade,  died a year ago today at the ripe old age of 84.  After finishing high school he joined the U.S. Air Force Cadets and served during World War II.  He was married to his wife for 58 years, had four children, and six grandchildren.

He worked hard, having survived the great depression; retired from the Colorado Department of Transportation.  He was honest and his word meant more than any form of written contract. He was never a fan of credit cards and rarely used them.  The mortgage on his house was completely paid in full, and he owned his vehicles out right.  He lived simply within his means, paying for things as he went and enjoying the simple but most meaningful pleasures of life, including time with his family, friends and his wife.

Entertainment didn't have to be expensive to be enjoyable.  He liked to go fishing, camping and hunting.  Occasionally, there were family vacations, dancing and even a cruise or two. He always made time to help a friend, share a story, and in his later years to pray.

He loved life and shared his passion for life and its many lessons with his children and his grandchildren.

We are all so fortunate to have had such a man of substance, honor and integrity in our lives and we miss him terribly.

Houston "Bud" Slade   (June 13, 1923 - January 6, 2008)
