As with every other profession you can think of there are good roofers and bad ones. A roof replacement I had done in the past started out good but then turned into a six month nightmare. It was time consuming, distressing and a total pain to get the roof completed. After I gave the roofing company the first insurance check up front (first mistake), several weeks went by of delays and your next on our list and the materials have been ordered and on and on. I know what you're thinking! "Why did you pay them anything in advance stupid"? All I can say is it was a weak moment while dealing with a death in the family and I felt comfortable this roofer was going to take care of the problem at hand. Well let me tell you, I won't do that again! It did finally get completed but on after agonizing waits and threatening phone calls.
A storm came through a couple of weeks ago and blew off one of my ridge caps. I called a roofer from a radio ad and he says I need a new roof. Well here I go again, but this time I'm being more involved in the process of selecting a roofer instead of letting a roofer select me. He doesn't give an estimate but takes whatever the insurance company pays plus my deductable. Oh yeah and he wants some pay up front! What is it with roofers wanting paid in advance (I wish Realtors could get paid in advance)? He came by last night wanting me to sign some papers giving them authority to file a claim with my insurance company. After telling him I was going to speak with some other companies before making a decision het became rather irritated and said we may as well not go any further if I intended to compare quotes since they don't give them. I think he answered my question about using them for this work so I am looking for another roofer now.
Do your homework before signing any document with a Contractor.
