Home staging and Garages

There is something to be said about a large and clean garage.  Really, garages are just as much of a selling point to men (and women) as the interior of the house.  As home stagers, we consult about every space in and around the home, but sometimes, the garage is the leftover space that gets no attention and many other times it becomes the dumping ground for the items that need to be stored from inside the home.

It would be a wise reminder to do a walk-through of the garage when consulting with our clients and show them areas of improvement that can be made to show off this positive or negative room.  It can easily be transformed into a selling feature with a little tlc.

Next time, discuss cleaning, organizing, and non-conspicuious ways to store those items that all too often get put in the garage when putting a home on the market.

I consulted on a $1 million dollar listing that had a 3 1/2 car garage.  It was stuffed to the gills with everything imaginable.  A boat (to be restored), a truck (to be restored), a motorcycle, taxidermy of all sorts, boxes upon boxes of stuff.  It took some convincing, but they finally agreed to get a  storage unit.  It was like showing a $1 million dollar house without a garage.

Great post!  Sometimes a garage space can be staged, too - perhaps as a study, workspace or hobby room, depending on the size.  Buyers love this, since it's very obvious that a garage can be used for cars and storage, but the more imaginative uses aren't always obvious!

I agree!  Get a storage unit and stage every space in the house - including the garage!

Oh yeah Letitia, I just did a consult and the garage was a nightmare.  Oil stains, junk.  I recommended they clean and paint the floor and get rid of the crap.  It is a selling point.  Good post!

Great post and a reminder to us all.  I am amazed at the things people can stuff into a garage!
