Fredericksburg Va and Trout Fishing

By
Real Estate Agent with Fredericksburg Realty, Inc.

Who would ever think about brook trout fishing in Fredericksburg Va?  Brook trout in Fredericksburg?  Brook trout in Virginia?

After fishing for trout in New Brunswick Canada, Montanta, and Wyoming, I can tell you that one can have a great day of fishing in Virginia.  No, not Fredericksburg (along the Rapahannock River) but in Syria.  Yes, Syria Virginia!  Not far from the Graves Mountain Lodge one can find some mighty nice brook trout fishing.

Yesterday morning "The Boyz" left Fredericksburg Virginia at about 0900 (9:00am) and drove to a stop along the dirt road that follows (roughly) the Rapidan River as it flows toward the Chesapeake.  Rough terrain to say the least.  We stopped at a place that is not too far from the Hoover Camp.  Incidentally, the Camp is a National Historic Landmark.

By the time we were "hooked up" it was about 1030 and after a few minutes walk we were all in the stream ready to catch the brookies.

Many are the times that I have forgotten to bring along my digital camera when we hit the streams.  Yesterday was not one of them.  I wanted to be able to share my day with all of you Active Rainers.  And as they say, "the proof is in the puddin'."

Ladies and gentlemen, the Virginia Brook Trout!

Just so "The Boyz" don't feel left out, here they are in one of their finest moments of the day:  you are looking at "Rickey", "Mikey", "Ben Jammin'" and (behind the gentle giant) "Spitless."

And, finally, just to give you all an appreciation of the beauty of a Virginia trout stream, some pictures of the Rapidan River in April of 2007.

If you ever meet another one of "The Boyz" don't ask them about the ending to our fishing day!

Wonderful photos.

I've caught "Brookies" in the Rapadan.  I've caught native Brookies in the Rapadan.  The ones with pink flesh.

I haven't been fishing on the Rapidan since the flood.  These days, I tend to stick to Largemouth Bass from a boat in Maryland or Virginia lakes.

Give me an afternoon on a body of water with a fishing rod in my hands and you've got one very happy person.

Thanks for the moment.

Danny - It was a great way to spend the weekend.  Enjoyed it immensely.

Lenn - Have no idea about the color of the flesh.  Catch and release area.  Have been going up there for about 7-8 years now.  Always a great day.

Luke - You must try it.  Got back into trout fishing after doing some as a youngster right there in New York Sate.

Rick - In that case all brookies taken from the stream in our area would be pink.  There are no hatchery brook trout on the Rapidan that close to the source (in the Blue Ridge Mountains).

Paul

Hi, I just moved to Lake of the Woods. I understand that the fishing is great in the lake. Can you advise me of that? Also, along Falls Hill road in F'burg there is a section of the Rappahancok River, is there any good fishing in this part of the river? How about the Motts Run Reservoir? Like the lady said, put a fishing pole in my hands and you have one happy camper. Somewhere in my not so distant future, I will be on, in or around water all the time, fishing. Love the pictures and thanks for sharing your story.

Hi Paul.

Fishing at Lake of the Woods is great.  Although I have not fished there in years, one of my great fishing buddies' son has pulled out some trophy sized bass from LOW.  Along Fall Hill Road you can get some nice fish if you time it right.  Further downriver, near the Falmouth Bridge, perch fishing is pretty good.  Motts Run Reservoir is also a good place to fish.  Have taken my grandsons there a few times and they had fun.  Lake Anna State Park is also a great place to fish.  Hope you enjoy your stay here in the Fredericksburg Virginia area.  Believe it or not, I seldom eat any of the fish I catch; catch and release is commonplace.
