What's New

By
Home Inspector with AllSpec Professional Property Inspections Inc

I was doing an inspection on a vacant flip. So my radar is on high. You just never know what you are going to find. There is this smell of burning in the house. BTW the house has no heat and one ac window unit for 1500 sq.'.

I figured the smell may dissipate but it doesn't. I take my nose room to room and I find one fan that seems to be emanating the odor. New fan installed by the "electrician". I take out my laser thermometer and shoot the fan low and behold 130 degrees, that seems hot to me. I've had a laser for seven or so years but have never shot a fan.

I check all four brand new fans installed by an "electrician"all between 125-135 degrees. I told my client I'm pretty sure that's bad and I would call the store or manufacture to double check. I called the store first and he said shut off the fans and get the "electrician" back to check how he wired it.

I guess I'll never find out what happened, but I'll shoot some fans on my next inspection.

My husband is an electrical contractor, and you would not believe the stuff he sees done by handymen.  It takes 6 years for him to get his master license, and yet so many people think that a handyman can do the job- including handymen.

A lot of handymen will just see an electrician do something and then try and copy it.  For example, just a couple of weeks ago he took out work where the handyman had wrapped a bunch of wires together.  He probably saw an electrician wrap the ground wire around the other wires in a device, and then tried to copy it.  But the handyman just wrapped all the wires together into a big bunch- which would heat up and start a fire.

Hire an electrician.  6 + years experience and education can't be "copied" by a handyman.
