On the East End, the North Fork of Long Island. A Dog-Gone Find.

By

Our bulldog, Oliver, became VERY ATTACHED to a very specific dog toy. It was an amazing toy: a rubber ball attached to a string.

IT NEVER OCCURRED TO ME THAT, WHEN IT FINALLY (after seven months) EXPIRED, locating the same toy would be a search…resulting in a REAL FIND!

After looking through several stores known for having dog toys, and realizing that a generic variety, rather than the REAL DEAL, would last no more than a few days with our somewhat…exuberant family member, it occurred to me to try a NEW place on the North Fork of Long Island. While calling itself a dog ”daycare”, surely they’d also carry some dog toys…

Not only does DOGTOWN, located at 40385 Rt. 48, Southold NY 11971, carry dog toys, they carry QUALITY dog toys. Sure enough, a container holding my sought after “Oliver toy” was right there in abundance.

Much to my delight, the owners offered me a tour of their new facility. All the while, my mind considered what was once unthinkable: FINALLY, A GREAT PLACE TO LEAVE THE DOGS!

For those of us that travel, even if it’s a visit to see relatives in Westchester  NY or Connecticut, such trips never included the luxury of an overnight- to the contrary, plans always revolved around, “What time should we leave to get back to the dogs”?

While bringing Oliver and Greta would be terrific, dogs aren’t always a welcomed appendage (particularly if they’re a bit excitable in a new environment).

For those visiting the east end of Long Island, whether it’s the North Fork or the Hamptons, DOGTOWN is a place where not only will you feel comfortable leaving your best friend for a day (or ten), the convenient location makes it absolutely perfect for frequent “hellos” (if they’ll bother saying “hello” back).

As the pics demonstrate, this is a HAPPY CREW at DOGTOWN- that it’s impeccably clean is just an unexpected bonus.

That the owners are clearly DOG LOVERS is evident in their planning of this luxe dog daycare.

While rates are subject to change, I’ll include their handout (effective 1/09)- along with a phone # to call for reservations. 631-765-8844.

Based on what we’ve seen, this is a place that could end up being “the” place for both locals with beloved dogs, and visitors finally able to comfortably accommodate their four legged friends, so call early!

Hey Laurie - that place sounds like a great find!  Unfortunately, the 'handout' is not readable, so I have no idea what the pricing is like, but tell me this...do you think they would offer a discount on 4 dogs?!

I 'hear ya' about making plans around the pups...that is the only 'down-side' I can see in owning a dog(s).  Fortunately I have 3 grown daughters that all live close enough to help out with 'dog-sitting' when I want to get away for a few days.  I must tell you, however, I spend a lot of my 'vacation' thinking about the pups and missing them!

Val, if you go to optionsrealty.com, the article is there- just click on the handout and it becomes bigger (it might not do that on AR). The place is fantastic!

I just clicked on the "menu" and it gets bigger on AR, too- just click it for fees.

Thanks, Jennifer- it was such a relief to find a place outside of a vets office (or outdoor kennel) that is close by- when the market turns around, I might just send Oliver there to get him out of my hair for a few hours a week- let the other dogs toss around the fantastic ball toy for him, over and over!

I called Dog Town thinking of bringing my dog there for a week.  It looks really nice and seems like it would be a great place for grooming. I was told that she would be in a 4X4 room.  When I asked if she could see out of the room, I was told there were bars to look out of.  I think I see those wooden enclosures with the bars in the picture.  I'm not crazy about that.  If she undergoes an evaluation for a fee and is found to be other-pet friendly, she can come out during the day when there are other pets there into the play area.

My vet, North Shore Animal Hospital, also boards.  There she would be in a kennel (cage) based on her size and I could pay to have her walked each day-once or twice.  The rate is definitely cheaper, but gets close with 2 walkings a day.  I'm torn, because, at least in a crate (cage) she can see all around her and watch whats going on.  The closed in wall thing at the other place, I'm not crazy about.

Both places let them out briefly to do their business.

I wish there were other alternatives.  But I guess if she is found to be pet friendly, Dog Town would definitely win.

Any thoughts anybody?

Hi, Lynne-

When I visited, they had two play areas (one is pictured; there's another inside, as well). All of the little dogs were running around in the one with the playset, and the larger dogs were in a pen directly across from it. They also have an outside area (likely the "business" area). The kennels in the back weren't in use when I stopped in looking for Oliver's toy- this was an unexpected visit on my part  . The pens (2) in the front have a short fence, and if I recall correctly, the dogs can see out. At the rear are the individual kennels (those are the wood kennels).

The best thing to do would be to visit without calling, as I did- it's definitely a place where I'd leave my bulldog, as well as my 17 year old miniature pinscher- it was immaculate in the dog pens, where they were playing. What I liked as well were the healthy treats up front; they seem to be very dog-health conscious there. Check it out- I can completely relate to how hard the choice is.

As a huge dog lover and owner, I know that dogs are indeed pack animals, so I'm sure most dogs will absolutely love the phermones and excitement of being around fellow canines, provided it's a well-socialized bunch of dogs and they are in a healthy environment, which sounds like this one fits the bill!

Chris, I'm definitely going to try it out- some places just have a good "feel", and this one hit that note. It's really hard to consider places- visiting first is the way to go.
