Match the Book to It's Cover

Home Stager with Glastonbury Home Staging

The HGTV's Designed to Sell experts' list this as a top tip for getting a house sold. I couldn't agree more. Nothing is more disappointing than pulling up to a beautiful home, getting so excited to see the inside and walking through the door and feeling a hugh let down.

My company Glastonbury Home Staging, recently bid on a bank-owned property in my neighborhood. It is a restored Victorian Colonial. I believe they are sometimes referred to as "painted ladies" because of the bold colors that were used historically.

A few years ago someone restored this lovely "old lady" and we all watched, delighted by the transformation. The person would had bought the place hired an expert to do the outside work. The new owner decided to take on the inside. Clearly he lacked the knowledge, resources, skill, and dare I say taste to pull this off, and consequently defaulted and went bankrupt.

When I went to see the place I was stunned at what I saw; sloppy, incomplete work, cheap materials, garrish fixtures, nothing worked anywhere. It was utterly sad. Such a waste of time, money, effort and done without permits to boot! Now the bank has to make things right with the town, and have only approved some painting. I did not get the bid. I wasn't surprised.

There will be an auction soon.  An extreme case I know, but I do see it to a lesser degree frequently. I think people tend to maintain their yards and landscaping and let the inside go.

Many neighborhoods have covenents dictating what you can and can not do outside.  So sellers please apply the same standards to the inside of your house, don't disappoint your potential buyers!!  If they've come as far as the front door, make it worth their trip!

Hi Rhonda,  The photo you have with this posting must not be of the interior of the home you are describing because it is beautiful!  I also find the opposite dilema:  when the exterior of the home has been neglected, but the interior is great.  Sellers who are really serious about selling a home need to make sure they have covered all the bases.

Diana - You are correct the photo is not from the house I described. I debated about using it, and decided to use a positive photo. Sellers need to take a serious look at what the public doesn't see before they list their house. They need to call a stager, not only will it save them, time and money, but embarrassment or hurt feelings when the feedback starts coming in from potential buyers.

Tracy, Thanks for stopping by..... Yes, I hope sellers will realize that they must pull out all the stops if they have buyers taking their time out to view their house. We have to keep putting the message out there.  Best wishes to you for great success this year.

Deborah,  Yes it is a shame to learn of the history of these old homes.  Unfortunately in this situation, the guy was in over his head. He probably ran out of money, but also, I think it was intended as a quick flip not a labor of love.

As someone who owns a historic home - I'll tell you there are no quick flips on these!  Hopefully he left the incredible architecture alone and it can become beautiful again (maybe with your help?)!

OHHHH a little bit of knowledge can sometimes be dangerous and it sounds like that was the case here.  Well you made lemonade out of lemons though.

Margaret -  Yes, the previous owner, had a professional handle the outside and it looks great, but inside. He was way over his head. Thanks for stopping by.

Rhonda, That's a shame to hear that....those old homes have so much appeal for so many people if only they look cared for.  Now it's just going to Auction when I believe you could have done so much with it.

An interesting account and such an important point you make. What is more disappointing than to get your hopes up only to be let down?! Certainly not the way to impress interested buyers! I always think of a theme for each of the homes I stage and weave it throughout, beginning outside.

Thank you for bringing up this worthy topic!
