Are you asking your blog, and your self, the right questions?

Education & Training with Writing Roads

For the business owners and bloggers that are publishing a blog for the purposes of growing their business, establishing themselves as an expert, selling products, promoting services, etc...certain questions must be asked - before you begin and as you go along - in order to maintain your personal brand and reach your goals. Here's my list:

  1. Why are you blogging? What is your goal, your mission, your raison d'etre? I recommend that you post this on your site - I've done mine as a tagline under my header, and I offer it to my readers as a guide telling them where they are and what they're going to get. It reads: Thoughts & actions about writing, blogging, social media & marketing - stirred vigorously with dashes of this freelancer's life.
  2. Who is your audience? You will write, I hope, different kinds of posts if you're communicating with luxury vacationers vs. small town suburban home owners.
  3. What is your audience looking for? This will influence your post topics, your keywords and your tone.
  4. What do you know? Please only write about things you know - we look to many bloggers as sources of quality information, add to the trend.
  5. Who knows what you don't know? Interviewing experts offers vital information to your readers and it rounds out the information. I know, I know - It's so easy to just pretend we know everything...but we don't! Our readers will respect us if we are honest and forthcoming.
  6.  What does your schedule look like? It is best to pick regular blog publishing days and stick with them. We are all creatures of habit and we tend to expect our blogs to air at their usual times - like our favorite TV shows. Feeds and email alerts do help, but consistency is nice. (Disclaimer: I am still working on following this bit of advice!)
  7. Can you commit? The biggest blogging pitfall is not following through. If you can't commit to regular, value-packed posts, get someone to help you. If you recognize blogging as a powerful marketing tool for your business, it's worth it.
  8. Can you write? Valuable information that is captured in quality prose raises your levels of professionalism, engagement, return visitors, joint partners and respect. Hire a writer to help you if this isn't your forte. (I know a few good ones if you're looking)
  9. Does blogging make sense for your industry? Is the Pope Catholic? Sorry, I'm biased. I'm hard pressed to find a business that wouldn't benefit in some way from a professional establishing themselves as an expert, driving qualified traffic to their website, spreading the word and sharing information. The only example I can think of would be something like Area 51 - or any other place, idea or business that is supposed to be top secret!

Did I forget anything? I'd love to hear your ideas...

Thanks for the post Julie!  I sometimes struggle to continue blogging, especially in really busy times.  But I have renewed this year my commitment to being more consistent!  Great post!

Julie - good points and I really likie the idea of interviewing an expert in a particular area.  I think I'm going to try doing that next week with a Home Inspector and a Stager.  Thanks for the info.

I need to work on scheduling myself better.  I have posts coming out all day and night...  I need to get more scientific about when they get released.

Julie, love the post and you're so right. I schedule my blogging time just as I do all my other to do's. I sometimes find it hard to find subjects to write on but I am learning places to find more.

Your recommendations make a lot of sense to me. I am still working through some of them as I think, like many things, blogging is always a work in progress.

Salient points Julie.  I try to look at things simply and say, what can I do to add value to my audience and then base everything from there.  I don't want to duplicate what can easily be found on Trulia, Zillow and a kazillion other sites.  I want to write short, succinct posts that add insight, cause reflection, or stun a reader into pondering something that they might not have thought about.  I'm not saying I'm successful, but just trying to deliver an insiders viewpoint of what I myself would want to know if I were a consumer.

Perhaps I'm missing the boat here eh?  I try to have very simple and well defined goals.

Julie; good post. the toughest one for me is blogging regularly. I am squeezing in some comments tonight as love reading all the good stuff, but have not blogged in maybe two weeks now! Augh! That's the longest. Blame Active Rain for that one too :)  as just got a referral thru AR, so am writing an offer tomorrow along with another one from my own website.  It is bugging me to go this long without blogging. So will fit it in somehow this next week. :)

Hi Chris, I think that if you blog about your experiences that you will build your following. Only you will express the idea in your own unique way. You are absolutely right. No sense in writing what you read on other sources. Take an experience that you have had with a client and tie it in with whatever the current news of the day is. Real life examples always resonate with your readers.

Julie: Another spot on post about blogging. Will you stop with the featured posts already? I try to post several times per week, but sometimes I am so busy with my core business, home staging, that I don't have time. This year I am going to try writing a few posts in advance so that I can post each week even if I am too busy to write in any given week. That's the goal, anyway. Same with newsletters. I am going to write them in advance and then add 1 or 2 very current articles just before I send them out.

Thanks for the kick in the pants, Julie!

Wow - you turn off your computer for a few hours and look what happens. Everyone of these comments is so poignant. Thank you all for truly adding to this conversation.

James - you especially get points here - you pretty much wrote a new blog post for yourself - you better repurpose those tidbits and post them!!!

Michelle - I think you have some great ideas about writing in advance. I do that too - or rather, whenever I have an idea I jot it down - so I have a big stock of started posts I can jump in to...

Julie,

I am new to AR to and to blogging.   My way of thinking is that is free marketing, a great way to eventually be discovered by potential clients' online searches, a great learning experience and it is fun.  If it can generate a lead and/or result in a closing, that is just icing on the cake.   Congrats on being featured.
