On January 7th 2009 we got word that with the record snow fall combine with a visiting"Pineapple Express" we were likely to see some flooding throughout Western Washington...and boy they weren't kidding!!

I headed out that Wednesday morning to snap some photos of the preperation down in lewis County as they had been hit hard in December 2007 with the Interstate ending up under 10ft of water and I was curious to watch the progression and document it...i didn't want to miss a thing this time!

I won't bore you with a bunch of words as I have found that the pictures say it all...So let's begin!

Tenino City Park

This was across the street from my house in the Tenino City Park...we have no river or stream so imagine my suprise when I stepped out my front door!

We actually had some rapids...i jumped in my car and headed down to Centralia about 10 min. south going the back roads..

Everyone was getting ready for the waters to rise...and I mean everyone...

It was already flooding in many streets...the leveei would not breech until 8am the next day...UGH!!

Cars were parked, owners nowhere to be found, people started to to venture out...curiousity is human nature I think...

I decide to head home and make dinner...I took a couple more pics on the way home...

When I arrived home the Tenino City Park was under more water...

I made dinner & then  called my friends Lisa & Julia to see if they would like to return to Centralia with me to help sandbag as the homeowners were left to sandbag self serve style! So we had a cocktail and headed out...Me in the orange, Lisa in red & Julia in Gray...boy were we soaked & sore the next mornin'!

We met wonderful, sweet people and everyone banded together to help each other out...it was an amazing experience I will never forget! The next morning we headed out to check out the Deschutes Falls in Tumwater...so stay tuned for my next blog of Day 2!

Flooding seems to happen all the time, isn't their something engineers can do to stop it?

Morgan: It does seem hat as the climatee has been gradually changing the flooding is more frequent. I know that the Army Corp of Engineers has done controlled releases of our area dams to help alleviate pressure on the dams while trying to minimize excessive flooding. Because Western Washington sets at the foothills of the cascade mountains we have many valleys. The lands that many of these towns rest in were carved out by glaciers & rivers which of course make them very susceptible to flooding as it is a natural flow for water. To compound the issue we do not have open ended budgets to address these problems...the record snowfall last month blew the local & state budgets through the roof! In 2007 we had significant flooding due to record rainfall...literally day after day of torrential downpours unlike anything I had seen. I truly don't know what the answer is, my knowledge on the subject is next to nil and I can not pretend to know the answer anymore than I can pretend to know how to keep this country from heading into another great depression. I sure wish we had the answers...I guess time will tell! Thanks for stopping by and let's hope Alaskans can make through the record cold they are enduring, my sister-in-law called 2 days ago to tell us it was -50 degrees in her town and she already has trouble staying warm as she is in the late stages of MS! I'm sending her fleece sheets...
