I had this conversation with my daughter and son-in-law the other day. She says that she might need to learn to golf so she can go to the 'golf outings'. She is 31 and a VP at a major bank. She thinks business happens on the links. He works for a major Philly law firm and doesn't speak sports either. He thinks it could help if he did.
Come to think of it, most of the guys I know don't speak sports either. I don't. Heck, I didn't know the Eagles were going to be in the super bowl till the day before. I can enjoy watching a game - I just don't know who the players are - and don't care. My 95 year old aunt Aggie knows more than I do - at least about the Buffalo Bills. She knows what positions they all play, who is hurt and when they are coming back. She was a secretary when she retired.
It isn't that I don't like sports. I have a black belt in Tang Soo Do and I'm VERY flexible. I just never learned the language of professional sports teams.
Still, I do 'get' the value of speaking sports - and it ain't just for business. Think about it. The president of a company and the janitor working there can have an intelligent conversation about sports. The playing field is level - at least if they both speak sports.
I just got back from the first meeting with a new client. Going out the door he said 'Go Eagles". I'm guessing they may be playing tomorrow. He and his wife want me to help them in their home purchase. (I'm very fluent in speaking real estate). They even found me because I'm the only Exclusive Buyer Agent with an office in South Jersey. (Cherry Hill to be exact) They found my affiliation with NAEBA too. (NAEBA- National Association of Exclusive Buyer Agents).
I'm hoping they value my ability to speak real estate more than my ability to speak sports. I have held a license since 1987. A lot of new Realtors are not fluent in Real Estate.
I'm going to send this link to my daughter and son-in-law: (even though it is over 10 years old)
