Call *DPS (Department of Public Safety) in Texas for non-life threating situations
The Texas Department for Public Safety and a four wireless carriers have worked out a deal with *DPS to use when you are in a non-life threatening situations.
If you have Verizon, Cingular, Nextel or ALLTEL you can dial *DPS or (asterisk 377) free of airtime charges. This is very similar to the DPS roadside assistance number 1.800.525.5555.
This is a great way to get a hold the DPS and they will dispatch a State Trooper or other officer to help you.
You should use the number if
- You see suspicious behavior
- Stranded person or vehicle
- Hazardous situations
- Or other roadside dangers.
This should not be confused with 911 for life threating situations.
