Self Directed IRA's

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Gold Star Realty, Inc.

We're all looking for ideas on how to expand our areas of expertise.  The self directed IRA's seem to be a great vehicle for those who are disenchanted with the stock market...not that they want to dump everything invested but, to perhaps diversify a bit and move their monies around a bit.

It looks as thought, historically, it's taken years,10 or more, for the stock market to rebound to even a break even position.  Where, if we self direct our IRA monies...and leverage a bit, we immediately recoup a significant position?  Am I all wet?

I sincerely would appreciate some comments on this process.  I'm excited to learn more and...I am!!!  I look to increase my business this year with quite a few of the IRA investors....Interesting stuff.

Don't you just love this diverse business?  I do!  Let me know if you have experience in these investments...good, bad or indifferent.  Thanks, Robin

I used my IRA to buy a rental house.  It keeps appreciating, brings me a monthly check...which has to stay in the IRA... and Iwhen I sell the house I will carry the note and make a few more bucks. I  should have taken more money out of the market and bought two houses!  I work with Equity Trust in Ohio.  They are well equipped to help with self directed IRAs.  If you have lots of money to play with...become a micro bank.  Best of luck.

Robin,

i just found your post and I have spent much of the day researching self directed IRAs.  I agree that it may be a great way for clients to diversify a portfolio.  The other thing I am finding is that it could make perfect sense for someone purchasing real estate for retirement purposes.  Once they reach 59 1/2 they can build and/or move in and it becomes an IRA distribution. Great info..thanks.  This ads to the numerous questions I have for my meeting next week!  Interesting stuff, eh?  I have so many clients with IRA's who are suffering and know that they will not be able to rebound in the market and are desperately looking for an alternative......this might be it.  Let's keep up w/each other as we learn.  Thanks,Keith...Robin

Hi Robin.  We are self-directed IRA administrators and work with real estate agents and brokers to teach them about this strategy all the time.

You can get more information at www.entrustnortheast.com or on my blog at www.entrustnortheast.blogspot.com.  I am also online at Broker Agent Social.  There is an Self-Directed IRA blog there as well.

Feel free to use me as a resource!

Thanks for the great info.  I'm learning everyday about these vehicles and the fabulous benefits that one can achieve.  I have a group of investors with money in IRA's...some want to transfer to the Roth's and some just invest from their current IRA.  We're gearing up for some significant projects.  Some investors just want a guaranteed return - 10%...this is exciting!!!
