What questions should I ask a professional videography crew?

So you’ve decided to take the plunge and hire a professional. Now what?  I’ve compiled a list of questions mainly gathered from the Digital Video Summit at Inman Connect in NY to help you find the right crew for your needs.

1.)  Ask to see their work.  This is their resume in video form.  See if they have the skills you are looking to hire.

2.)  Ask for references and CHECK THEM!  Would you believe most companies that ask for references never check them?  If you are going to make the investment make sure you know you’re dealing with the right people.

3.)  Shop around.  Once you know what you are looking for, get bids from several video companies.  You may be surprised at what you find some in your own backyard are more expensive than ones across country!

4.)  Ask “what is included with that price?”  Many companies don’t include post editing fees and this can KILL you in the end.

5.)  Find out if you own the video or if the company owns the final product.  If the company owns the footage this could become tricky when trying to distribute your video to the masses.

6.)  Make sure any music that is used is licensed or copyright free!!!!   This is important even if you're doing the video yourself.

7.)  Ask about their turn-around time.  How long will it take to get your video shot, edited and delivered to you?

Good luck...your videos are going to look great :-)

Some great tips...especially on the OWNERSHIP.  That could cause quite a stir I would think!

Ron-  Without a doubt!  Could you imagine going to post your video and being told you have to pay a syndication fee?!  Unfortunately, it's happened.

It is good to know the total costs... as well as see the companies reel. (lingo...  :^D)  I would ask to see your reel... but I'm on it.  Cool.

Lane- Too funny!  As for costs, they should be comparable to print marketing costs when speaking about a video home tour.  As for a profile piece (something to put on your home page) that should be anywhere from $900 to $2000 depending on how in depth you want to go (the amount of editing, length, etc)  Most at Inman were close when speaking about cost...anywhere from $200 on up.  I always say if you're holding a quote for thousands of dollars and you can't figure out why...rip it up and run away!

Tara, we talked about the company that was pitching one of my wife's clients (different end user industry).  They think it is what the market will bear... but that market won't bear it either.

BTW, you guys are pretty good on price considering the excellent quality...

Lane-  Have I mentioned lately that I love you?  ;-)  We think we're pretty darn reasonable but it's great to hear that from others as well!

There's always so much to learn and apply from INMAN Connect. I've only been to one (SF) so far, but can't wait until I can attend another! Nice post!

Tara, great list. Another to add is to really critique the marketing and creativity embedded in her/his sample work. That is very important as this is marketing rather than art.
