Hawaii Appraisal Board Votes to allow distance education fro Qualifying Courses

Had a discussion today with the executive director of the Hawaii Appraisal Board.  They voted recently to start allowing Appraisal Qualifying education via distance learning due to the lack of in-class courses.

Even in the depressed economic conditions there are still people wanting to enter the real estate and appraisal professions.  Hawaii changing the rules is just another example of the migration from in-class to online education.

Economics of in-class education are having a dramatic effect on the choices "new blood" have for entering the real estate profession and our regulators need to wake up and pay more attention to the quality of offerings provided the new entries.  As with a home, building a solid education foundation from the beginning significantly impacts how wel you succeed as an agent or appraiser.

Bud, I don't disagree with you on the need to have a solid background of education to enter into this industry.  Darcy just completed a Brokers course that was a mixed live and online course, very well done and she passed the test on the first try.  Something that I know several agents with much more experience than she has didn't do even with all live classes.  I think that it is a great alternative!

Thanks for the comments.  For twenty years, as a national provider of real estate and appraisal education (all we provide is distance education) CompuTaught has lobbied and at times been the lone voice to get state to change their statutes and rules to allow distance education.  but, we've alway argued and lobbied the position of raising the bar and weeding out the poor performing distance learning offerings.  Unfortunately, in some states quality control is none existent and I for one believe the profession suffers because of it.

Once again, appreciate the post!

P.S.  We'll be in Utah with Real Estate Prelicense courses in the next few months!  If you know of anyone who is looking to enter the profession late spring tell them to contact me via this forum.

Wow, I assume distance learning includes online education, as well as appraisal education in the other states. That is significant news! (Being concerned of not enough young blood.)
