Good Luck and God Speed!

Photo of the USS John C Stennis deploying Jan 09

I woke up on Tuesday morning much the same as I usually do. At about 6:15am my eyes popped open and I sauntered upstairs and into the kitchen. I made a smoothie for my husband and myself and waited until 6:30am when my daughter informed me she wanted out of her crib.

She played with her Daddy for a few minutes before he headed off to work, and I set about my day. I fed her, and as I was settling on the couch to check emails and such, I noticed the chop, chop, chop of helicopter blades outside. I opened my blinds and suddenly remembered that today was the day the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) was deploying for a scheduled 7 month WestPac.

There were news helicopters circling as well as Navy copters for protection. There were 2 Coast Guard ships standing guard as well as many small boats maintaining a perimeter around the massive aircraft carrier. And also the tugs, both forward and aft, pushing and tugging the ship out of harbor so it could set sail.

No matter where you stand on the war in Iraq, no matter how you feel about the past administration or the incoming one, no matter what affiliation you may or may not have with the military - you have to stand in awe at such a commanding sight.

But it's so much more. There are people stationed onboard that ship; men and women. They are mothers and fathers. Husbands and wives. Sons and Daughters. Friends and loved ones. Leaving for at least 7 months. They are strong. They sacrifice for our freedom, as do their families.

So, stand strong sailors. Be safe. Good luck and Godspeed!

Alisha - what a lovely post. I couldn't agree more! Fort Campbell is about 30 miles NorthWest of Nashville and our troups fly in and out of the Nashville Airport. We often have opportunities to know up close about their comings and goings.

Could you see that boat from your house???

Alisha, I agree with you. Support of our troops should be independent of politics. Soldiers do their duty no matter what it may be and they help make our country great. Godspeed and blessings to all of them!

It is a sight.  But, remember the Navy deploys like this whether WAR or PEACE.  Funny thing is that in my husbands 13 year career with the Navy he deployed more prior to the war in Iraq. It is what the Navy does - deploy :).  God Bless the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74).  Did you see the commissioning of the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77). I can only imagine how exciting it was to see the sailors run up those stairs to man those rails for the first time!

Connie ~ Yes, I am blessed to have that view from my living room! ~A:)

Jo ~ I also know what the Navy does. I lived it most my life. My dad was 22 year career Navy man, and then I went and married a Sailor... but it is still a sight to behold!! ~A:)

Alisha, I so hope I didn't offend you.  Wasn't my intention. I just think that we must educate the non-military that the Navy and Marine Corps always deploy - just more so now with all that is going on.  I know so many think that it is just happening because of the wars.  Funny how civilians don't understand - I never did when I was one.
