Real Estate Etiquette: Did I wake up and become a Doctor or Something?

By

Saturday morning in Southern California, sun not high in the sky yet, but definitely working it's way to a nice spot.  It's early in the morning, and I was just stirring from a great sleep when the phone rang.  I didn't know what time it was so I answered.....

"Hello, I am standing at this lot and want to know how much it cost?"

I had to shake my head and find my after I wake up and brush my teeth voice........

"What property are you at, can you tell me the street?"

"I am at 3rd and Williams."

"That lot is $120,000 and it's in a Commercial area."

"That's too much money."

"What are you looking for?"

"I want to put a mobile home on it."

"Oh, well I have several nice Residential lots that are bigger than that one, and they start at $25,000. They would be perfect for a Mobile Home if you would like to see them."

"I will talk to my husband and let you know."

After I hung up, I looked at the clock, it said 7:17 AM.  Oh my, I must have turned into a Doctor or something in the middle of the night, because this seemed way too early for people to be calling someone to ask about a piece of land.  I just don't understand why someone would think it is OK to call so early just because they are up, doesn't mean everyone else is.

I sell Real Estate, and that piece of land will still be there at 9am.  I think 9am is a reasonable time to call someone you don't know.  Especailly if you are just "land shopping" and not buying it at this very moment.  I don't go to bed with my files, and can't answer many questions with accuracy half asleep.

OK, it is now 8:52 and I am ready for any of your calls, having showered, eaten, and got my Professional self ready for a day of work.......you want land, I have land.  You want a House, I have Foreclosures, and nice properties that are turn key.  I can help you with most of your Real Estate needs, but please respect that I do not have Doctors hours :)

Amazing that someone thinks the rest of the world goes by their timeclock.  7am? WHAT?  I think I would have said, the office opens at 9am..  we will call you back. At least you had a courteous answer for the lady, which is more than many would have had at that time of the morning, on a Saturday too?

Kristin- I just shake my head sometimes....when I had my Office at the River calling at 7 was OK, and expected....as the day was 1/4 over by 9am.  But that was a specialized Market.  But for someone to just figure they can call Real Estate Professionals at all hours of the day and night, and we should answer is wrong......:)

Gail- I try to be courtious even when the other person is out of bounds.  I think you said it perfectly...."Amazing that someone thinks the rest of the world goes by their timeclock."

I think the only time I have ever not been upset with someone calling at 6:06am was when I found out they were from New York and were excited about a listing I had, that they saw online and in their excitement they totally spaced the time difference.

The only good thing that came out of it was because they felt so bad they became clients.

Kathy--I had someone call on new year's eve one year at 11:30 pm. He had just watched an informercial and was ready to start buying real estate with no money down. Those early and late calls seem to be the least serious so I let voicemail get them now. :)

Gary- This is true...some get excited, some forget time differences, some are cultural, and some don't think :)

Todd- Converting a call into a client is a good thing :)

Kristin- I am so glad you got that picture changed....once I saw you in your regular pictures I couldn't understand why you had that old picture :)  Nice, and love your smile :)

Teri- You mean someone actually called you at 11:30 pm on New Years Eve....now that is someone that needs to learn a little constraint :)  Good comment on the Voice Mail.

I couldn't agree more...I personally don't like to take calls late in the evening because that is when I can finally relax.  Yet, I do get the occasional call at 10:00pm.  This 24/7 is a bit too much sometimes!

Kathy, when that happens, I answer the phone too, thinking that it's an emergency or perhaps I've overslept!  I'm always amazed that folks will call from 7 am until 10 pm--what ARE they thinking?!

Hi Kathy...Thank goodness I've never had a call that early.  As much as I would like more buyers (Who wouldn't?) anyone that called at that hour would probably not be fun to work with long term unless they learned to be more considerate.

My goodness....that is early!  I think some people wake up super early and just assume the rest of the world is up and ready to go too.  It always scares me when I get those early calls......I'm afraid it's my parents or my kids with some kind of emergency.

Hi Kathy, that's a good one, Doctors hours. You must be thinking about the way things were when we were going up. Doctors don't even answer the phone today. At least not one you or I would calling. But.. having said that , the good thing was that the sign is working and the telephone number on it is good and that people are thinking about buying land and homes and whatever. Those are really good signs.

Next you should some sort of a switch that allows you turn off the phone or redirects it to an answering service. I heard about one service that answers the phone live as many hours a day as you want and then during dinner, sleeping or what ever times you arrange, your phone won't ring but the folks will be personally and professionally handled until you are available.

Very funny, Kathy...Are you sure they weren't from a different time zone? Sometimes I do forget about it and phone my kids out there on the coast---and wake them. Sometimes I just get tired of waiting for everyone else to wake up out there! I've had a few calls between 10-11pm---and they are from the west coast! But you are right...these hours are not ideal...unless someone's having a baby, cll at a decent hour.

Kathy, That is very rude to call someone that early about something that can wait a couple of hours.  I am so used  to answering the phone whenever it rings instead of letting it go to voice mail as I sometimes should.

Kathy—Great story-fun to read! Of course, to have this terrific story to tell you had to pay the price by being rudely awakened at an unreasonable hour. Hope this post helped make some lemonade out those early morning  lemons!
