My winter broccoli

Winter in Spring TX

Tomatoes and Broccoli in Spring TX

Okay my pretty yellow flower happens to be the broccoli that I missed picking.  It is out my kitchen window and I have enjoyed the heck out of the flower.  This is my first foray in to winter gardening and it has been a learning experience.

Marchel I sure appreciated you yellow flowers, since all I can see here is snow and ice.

Marchel, is it already spring there? I love gardening, but have been a little negligent recently. I do have roses and gardenias and oranges, but no other type of vegetation. ;-)

TERI, we have two seasons here in Spring summer and January and I'm afraid it is January.  I have had to cover my tomatoes several times this month.

SHIRLEY, I wrote this before seeing your post but your flower did remind me of this flower.

JANE, When I missed picking the broccoli I had no idea I would be seeing this pretty yellow flower.  It helps with the winter hum-drums so I'm glad I missed picking it.

Marchy, you have a beautiful garden. Have those tomatoes ripened yet? The flowers are magnificent! I will be calling you my friend. I have a foreclosure I want you to sell. If anyone can....it's you!

What a great splash of color in the middle of winter! And...those tomatos are looking good too. hey, I saw a very funny comment and photo by Liz on Rich's post this morning so I am hoping she is not only feeling better but getting back in to action too!

Hi Marchel - I had no idea that a broccoli, left unpicked, would flower like this....how clever of it to show us another side of it's personality....yes I believe plants and flowers also possess awareness...in a flora kinda way :-)

Did you have the note at the bottom when you originally posted?  I didn't see it.  I came back to see if you noted what this was.  I had no idea it was broccoli!  Almost makes you want to plant it for the flowers.

Marchel:  I just love these picture posts with flowers.  This time of year in Northern Virginia the trees are bare and the grass turns brown.  Just sad looking!

I have to say that does look nice, even if I am a Winter loving cold weather girl!  We went on a cruise out of Galveston the day after Christmas, and it was actually cool enough for a light jacket!

I am jealous.  I would love to garden in the winter, but the snow keeps me from that-lol.  Hmmm...Why do I live in the cold Midwest again?  I don't honestly know sometimes.

@ Rebecca:  My dear... Marchel has lots of room for you to move to Spring, Texas... just north of Houston.  And... I think Fort Worth and I could find a nice spot for you to move to here... too.  Take care... stay warm... watch out for frostbite.  :)

Marchel, I had no idea that such a pretty flower would appear if broccoli was not picked.  I learned something new today! It is a very pretty flower. I think I would have to leave a few unpicked just to have such a display.

I bet those tomatoes are going to be scrumptious!!

DEB, My one tomato that I brought in has slowly ripened.  The others are still on the vine.

RUSSELL, It is wonderful seeing Liz blogging again; isn't it?

GAIL, It was a total surprise to me to see that broccoli flowered if left unpicked.  The flower has now died but it was sure fun seeing that splash of color in the middle of the winter.

DOREEN, I had the note about broccoli there from the start of the post but it was down at the bottom; so would be easy to miss.

CHRIS ANN, We are a little on the drab side here also so it is fun seeing a splash of color.

CYNTHIA, I have to admit I did not know that about broccoli either.

CHERYL, We have two seasons in Houston; summer and January.

REBECCA, I do not miss the elements at all.  I have out of town buyers moving here from Colorado (which is where we moved from).  Today was in the low 50's; they were in short sleeves and I was in a sweater with a coat.

GENA, I think from now on when I plant broccoli I will leave on plant so I can enjoy the pretty flower because I enjoyed the heck out of this flower.  You have to look very close but that second picture had 3 or 4 bees that were enjoying the flower also.  I'm sure it is hard for them to find food this time of the year.

I can't tell for sure from the pictures, but it looks like it might be broccoli.

Added with edit: I just read the comments and see that it is broccoli. There are many foods that we eat that are quite beautiful if we let them bloom.

What a beautiful flower Marchel!  It makes me think of springtime, especially with the nice warm weather we are having in Colorado today!

RUSSELL, I had NO IDEA that broccoli had a pretty yellow flower if you don't pick it.  From now on I think I will leave one unpicked so I can enjoy the pretty yellow flower in the middle of the winter.

PATRICIA, I totally enjoyed seeing this out my kitchen window.  It has sense died and I just pulled the plant up to make room for winter potatoes.
