Hitting the wall

I was at church today and I heard a story that I would like to relate to you that I hope you will be able to use and that you will find helpful in your life.

This is a story about a runner who had trained for a long time to run in a marathon.  He had set his goals, worked out, ran, and did all the things that you would do to train for such an event.  The day came and he felt great.  He started off and ran the race that he had planned.  When he reached about the 15 mile mark, he came upon the heels of one of the men who was helpful to him in his training, so he decided to run along in his stride.

One of the things that happens when you are a runner is that you get to a point where you "hit the wall".  This is the time that you want to quit and stop.  Apparently all runners get this wall.  this young man normally got this wall at about the 20 mile mark.

He kept stride with his friend and felt very tired... his body was feeling the pains of the run.  His friend sensed that he was hitting the wall and kept telling him to come through it and to push himself.  The young mans family was situated at about the 22 mile mark and he knew that he had to "Push through the wall" and gain his strength back, so he kept in stride with his friend who kept offering help.

He talked about his "getting through the wall" and how good it felt as he kept up the pace with his friend, which was extremely hard for him.  His family was proud as they saw him pass by.  He kept at it, giving it his all, and finished the race just seconds behind his friend, and nearly collapsed at the end, totally exhaused.

He had discovered then that he had shaved off more than 15 minutes off of his goal time and also finished as one of the top 25 runners in the event.

Why do I relate this to you?

We find many times in our careers that we have hit a wall in one way or another.  It may be that you have done all that you can do and just can't seem to do any more.  Hopefully you will understand that if you push through this wall, you too will be able to finish among the top in our field.  If you feel you need a 'friend' to help you along the way, find a good coach, perhaps even someone in the MAP's system. (If you are not familier with MAP's, send me a note).

Good luck to you all... and here's to you getting through 'The Wall'
