American Flag

I am a Republican, so I have certainly come through the election of 2008 with some ambivilance.  But I am also an historian and a proud American.

I think that anyone who listened to Aretha Franklin singing just before Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States had to be moved to tears.

Of course, I cry during the Maytag washer commercials, so what do I know...

May God bless and protect the President and the United States of America

UPDATE: well I have my sense of humor back after listening to the Chief Justice mangle the oath of office.  But it is official - Best wishes #44.

I missed seeing Aretha, and the swearing in... didn't get up that early.  But saw some of the action and his speech.  This is certainly a turning point for our country.

Crying does seem to be the proper sentiment.

Yet another reason why I like you!

A very historic day for our country, indeed. And one that makes me proud to be an American. Not because I was necessarily pleased with the outcome of the process, but that we have this process in the first place....

uuugh! I am proud of America because I can still be free to disagree with the decision of America's choice for President. They made a choice in historic proportions because the majority of voters did not even know what Obama accomplished in his life other than get elected. Oh, he was a community origanizer.

Nick - keep in mind that my support for the new President is very conditional.  He is the President, and since I am an American I hope that he will be successful in foreign and domestic policies that promote the safety and economy of my country.  If he were to trend toward the policies that concerned us during the campaign becasue of his background and associations - then I will voice my opposition.  I would view our continued descent into socialism and lack of individual responsibility as contrary to the interests of the country.

But it is my hope that President Obama will realize that he has been elected and now has inherited new goals and objectives and will take a different view of events now that he is the President and now has the responsibility that used to belong to somebody else.  But my analysis will be based upon performance and outcomes - not personalities or any ill-will at the personal level.

We'll see said the zen master
