A day of inspiration

Home Stager with Stage to Sell - LA Home Staging

I woke up early this morning and turned on the TV quietly while the kids and my husband slept. I watched in awe the sheer mass of people who braved freezing cold temps and security for the chance to witness history being made. I marvelled that we as a country have made it this far, and that it happened in my - and my childrens' - lifetime.

We watched the inauguration in my kindergartener's elementary school "cafe-torium" along with hundreds of school children who sat quietly watching as our nation's first African American President was sworn into office. There was a sense of wonder in their eyes. They listened intently and clapped during the most poignant parts of Obama's inaugural speech. I cried.

Over the weekend we decided to host a neighborhood cleanup as part of the President's National Day of Service. There were only a small group of us, but together we picked up several bags full of trash that otherwise would've eventually ended up in our oceans. We had sore hamstrings, but felt good about what we had accomplished. And the kids learned a small lesson about the importance of doing something good for your community.

We are so lucky to live in a free country, where opportunities for people of every race, creed and religion abound. I urge everyone to help our country on its way to recovery. It will take a lot more than our government can do by themselves. It will take each and every one of us - volunteering in our communities, mentoring a college student, bringing groceries to a home-bound neighbor, reading to a child. There is a way for everyone to serve, and I hope you will take the time to find out how you can help. Go to the USA Service website and search for events in your neighborhood. Or better yet, host an event yourself! It doesn't have to be big in order to make a difference.

I agree with your sentiment, Annie. As a long-time volunteer in our community, I have seen the sucesses when people donate time and energy.  You are teaching your children a powerful lesson that will enhance their self esteem and sense of accomplishment and opportunity!

Thanks Kathy. I do hope that my children will keep the spirit of service alive! I hope to look for new ways to involve them in these types of events throughout the year.
