Dear Son,
As of today, you have a different Commander In Chief.
No shots were fired and no bombs were dropped on our Capitol. Our government was not overthrown, and no blood was shed.
We are safe, thanks to you, and soldiers like you throughout the time since our country's birth.
Your former Commander in Chief woke up this morning and had all the power of our military at his disposal. Tonight, he and Mrs. Bush are home in Texas, and are private citizens again.
Tonight you have a new Commander in Chief. He has come to serve just as the ones before him. It is not an easy task, just as yours is not.
This is the beauty of what you are defending. It is a wonderful and incredible thing, our democracy. You are protecting your new Commander as well as your former Commander and all the rest of the citizens of this great Republic.
I have been feeling a little saddened by the fact that former President Bush has been so trashed and maligned by the media and the general public. Many of the things that have been said about him have been ugly and mean.
The funny thing is, if these same folks had lived under Saddam Hussein's rule and spoken the same way, they would be executed.
Only in America are you free to vote for the leader of your choice and then say terrible things about them later. Our democratic system does work. What a country!
Our new President is calling on all of us to make sacrifices and fulfill our duty to help America go forward. I think you, Diana, and little Audrey are already doing that. And so are your fellow soldiers. And all the public servants including our new President, Mr Obama.
I'm proud of you, Danny, and I'm proud to be an American. Stay safe, Son, and return home safely from Iraq next month. I'm looking forward to hearing your voice again soon. Thank you, Son.
Love you,
Dad
