I grew up in an age where we did not see black people other than the maid! The maids got off the bus, came to our homes, cleaned and cooked and took wonderful care of us children. Then they disappeared onto those buses and went somewhere. I never thought about it as a child. It was a fact of life. They came, did what they did and left again to come back tomorrow morning.
It was the south - it was the 50's and 60's - both of my parents worked full time. When our maid got old her niece became our new maid - she remained our maid even after I had left the country at the age of 23 and moved to Germany -
In 1965 my high school became segregated - we had ONE black student - he was really quiet and really nice. But I never gave any of it much thought. It was the way things were.
After living in Germany and learning that the rest of the world is NOT segregated I started to wonder about what was going on in my own country. Things were not the way they were supposed to be in the 'land of the free and home of the brave'.
So now, as my own daughter has a black boyfriend and is happy as a clam with him, I am proud to see the changes in our own country! I am proud to see Barak Obama become our 44th President! I was moved to tears as I watched the inaguration yesterday!
This man who looks at his wife in front of the tv cameras with love and admiration, this man is the hope of our nation! He is coming in at a time when a miracle is required to bring this nation together again and make it whole! This man with that smile that melts hearts, this man with the moving speeches, this man who is well educated and willing to lead not just the United States, but reunite the world in peace is our hope! I am proud beyond words that the American people have chosen him to lead the nation out of one of our darkest times!
Obama - let the changes begin - let the wounds be healed - let world change come! Our hope - our dreams - this man who is our nation's 44th President! Barak Obama!!!!!
