Best Friends Animal Society spreading the word on Venice & Marina Del Rey Beaches.

I wrote this post last year. Then  I notice  today's Featured Group on Active Rain, wow did not even know this group existed. So I am reposting this word for word with adding this introduction as well as a picture of Best Friends Animal Society's advertisement.

The housing slump hurts more than just people.  Animals suffer from the housing market downturn and current economic times too. If you happened to read the LA Times on Saturday, December 6, 2008, the Home Section (Section F) was entitled The Pet Issue.  On the front page of Section F was a picture of Baldwin, a black, 1-year old Chihuahua mix currently awaiting adoption (the plight of black dogs and black cats is also addressed in this Section).

Animal shelters across the nation, sadly, are filled to overcapacity, due largely in part to pet owners losing their jobs and their homes.  Many animals that were once part of a loving home environment now they find themselves bewildered and scared on concrete floors in over-crowded shelter kennel runs. Many of these animals will face euthanasia.  LA Animal Services recorded a 20% increase in the number of impounded dogs compared to the same period in 2007.

If you are considering bringing an animal into your home by promising to make a lifetime commitment to that animal, I urge you to visit one of your local animal shelters or reputable animal rescue groups.  If you are not able to adopt an animal into your home, you may want to consider donating to a reputable animal rescue organization.  These organizations work tirelessly every single day to rescue as many animals as they can from the shelters and help place them in new homes.

That makes me sad. I wish more people renting properties would see this problem and be more lenient on the pet rule. It is like those commericals by that singer "Cheryl Crow" I think however, very sad, hard to watch and face the truth.

Lisa, you are so right it is sad. We can not save the whole world, but we can save one animal at a time and make progress.

Endre, It is very sad, I can't imagine abandoning a family pet that I love but can't afford to feed. We allow pets in some of our properties and so far we haven't had any problems. Our local shelters are always looking for donations -a great way for people to make a difference in their communities.

Debbie, I am with you on this, our two cats are family members. When our dog passed on to Rainbow Bridge we mourned  her as any family member would have. We can not fathom how any one could not take care of their animals..... that is another story....I would probably eat less then not take care of our four legged family members.  I agree with you shelters are looking for Money and we give it generously. I give a Donation to numerous Rescue groups from every commission. My other half she volunteers at Rescue Groups to help out every way.

Good morning Endre!  Unfortunately some people do not value all life.  We just rescued a puppy and she is already a member of our family.  For the life of me, I cannot imagine people abandoning animals!  I think that if you look carefully at these situations, many of the people who do this kind of thing do not treat their children, families, or other people well either.  Have a great weekend!

I would have 25 animals if I could. (but I have to stop at 3 dogs) I always urge people to go to their local shelter for adoption. Thanks for the post!

Susan, you are so right, most people who are concerned want to do more....if everyone was concerned we would not have these problems.

Bruce & Mary, you hit the nail right on the head, if they do not respect defenseless animals they sure have no respect for human life either.....
