Thurston County is Loaded with Colleges!

By
Industry Observer

The vitality of Thurston County is tremendously enhanced by the presence in the community of FOUR colleges!  We are lucky enough to be able to complete a bachelor's degree, a master's degree in quite a few disciplines, learn a trade, enhance our leisure time with fun new learning, improve our fitness, enjoy wonderful performing arts and events, and involve all ages with learning and fun - without leaving the county!

South Puget Sound Community College (www.spscc.ctc.edu)  is a 2 year school offering associate degrees in arts, science, elementary education, general studies, business or technical arts.  Many programs are specifically designed to make a transfer to a 4 year college easy upon completion of your first 2 years of study.  The community can also get involved with learning everything from computer/information technology, how to buy a digital camera (and use it!), creative metal & welding, financial strategies for successful retirement, yoga for "real women with curves" (I love that name!!), sing in a barbershop chorus and many more.

St. Martin's University ( www.stmartin.edu) is a four year college offering 6 master degree programs in addition to bachelor programs - master of business administration, arts in counseling psychology, education, teaching, engineering management, and civil engineering.  The campus also entertains the community with athletic events both men and women, lectures or other performances, and many, many events in the campus Pavilion from bazaars to meeting rooms for business or other groups.

Chapman University is the newest facility (www.chapman.edu is main site and then go to specific Washington locations under University College), offering on line classes as well as a campus location in Hawks Prairie.

The Evergreen State College (www.evergreen.edu) is one of the state's public 4 year colleges, offering also master's degree programs in education, environmental studies, teaching, and public administration.  Evergreen offers a wealth of community classes for fun or  knowledge - how about Tribal Style belly dancing, swim lessons for the kids, American sign language or Arabic, Poetry Practice, French & Japanese Media, ceramics or woodworking, Ecology & the Built Environment, or grant writing for just a taste of the classes offered!  The community is also welcome at college athletics and performing arts events, or to hike the acres of wooded campus, including the college's own saltwater beach.

How lucky we are to have these facilities right here at home in our community!

I agree with Liz. Photos please! =)  And I wrote a post about the colleges in our area a while back. I suggested how investors might want to invest in properties that are good for renting out to college students. The right rental property is a safe investment.

Thanks for your comments Liz & Lisa - great suggestion about including the photos, so I think I will take some to add to the blog this week!  And, Lisa, thanks for mentioning about investment opportunities near colleges - I agree totally that it can be a really good choice for a rental property - we did that ourselves when our son was in college, so I can't believe I didn't think to mention it!
