15 Reasons Why I Dislike MEMEs, Am I Alone?

  1. My understanding of this phenomenon was that it was intended to be a get to know yaw event. Not to pester members...
  2. Most members ignore your tag so the whole MEME was futile...
  3. Most members regard MEMEs as Spam...
  4. MEMEs waste bandwidth ...
  5. MEMEs are worthless for SEO...
  6. The comments you receive are usually from the person who tagged you (A pity Comment)
  7. They are one step below a chain letter...
  8. When you choose to tag someone it usually alienates that person from ever contacting you again...
  9. If you want to receive MEMEs you should join their group...
  10. When I received my last tag, it was from a person I really respect and enjoy reading, but now I hate to comment due to the tag...
  11. It was funny the first time but it's now kind of a sad old joke that has lost its humor...
  12. You can't opt out...
  13. With 742 members of this group http://activerain.com/groups/memes I would think they could meme each other till the cows come home...
  14. I think people who start a meme tag do so because they're having a post block and can't think of anything to write about...
  15. Do you want to chase away new members, tag them! The MEME's are attacking the Newbies..... BEWARE, you might be next....

I guess I just had to get this off my chest.

I am preparing to feel the wrath of MEME!

Does anyone else feel the same way too? Am I alone?

the MeMe is not intended to be a bad thing. They can be over powering at times.

I have been tagged and, to be a good sport, I always write something.  I have not, as of yet, tagged anyone else in my MeMe, however.  Perhaps, Paul, you'll be my first!  JJ... ;)

I don't mind them... but I seldom read them.  My biggest pet peeve is that the name has been altered here.  It has always been a Meme (rhymes with theme).  It isn't a Me Me.

It all depends on how you look at things. When there were much fewer members here I would read and comment on them as we all seemed to be regulars. Now that Active Rain has grown so much I too no longer read them along with a lot of other things.

I tend to look at peoples sites and outside blog to get some ideas of the person.

Not in favor of the bailouts either but little I can do about them except pay more taxes in the end.

Paul - thank you so much for writing this and am glad it is featured.  I dont have anything against the "MeMe" it is just when I have been tagged, I have felt guilty that I have had not a chance to write anything.  We have been so busy that it has been difficult just to keep up with our own content.  And the people who have tagged us, I hope they dont feel bad that we have not done a post yet... I just have not had the time !  So I appreciate you saying this as now I do not feel as bad.  For the folks that like them, that is fine though too !  It might be better for like once a year or something like that.  ~ Chris

Hi Paul, I think MeMe's have run their course.

Paul - I agree with you, although I do like to know what your interests are.  I think the MeMes about 'page 54 blah blah blah' is no fun, but the last one with the 7 little facts I enjoyed.

After reading your post, I had to think whether I tagged you or not.  I'd hate for you to not talk to me anymore because I tagged you.  Although I do not anticipate tagging you in the future.  You are probably right about the part where the person had a writers block initially and just started the MeMe.  From there, everyone keeps it going so that the person that sent it does not feel bad.

Congrats on the feature.

I'm sure that they are sent with good intentions, but I know I get busy and it is hard to think about Memes!  :-)

As Lane Bailey pointed out a couple of comments above this, meme is a one-syllable word. Somewhere along the lines in the Rain it got changed to MeMe and went off on a tangent. They can be interesting in moderation, but every once in awhile AR gets flooded with them which just makes me want to move to higher blogging ground.

Isn't freedom of choice a wonderful thing! We have the freedom to participate...or NOT! If anyone is tagged and choose not to participate....That's OK!  I enjoy reading and getting to know other agents, and sometimes finding common interests. I will agree some of the Meme's are like fingernails on the chalk board. So I just move on...

In the beginning it was cute- but sort of like a puppy who fails to learn housetraining and grows into a large dog..the cuteness factor wears thin.   Maybe like analog TV- Meme's too will cease to operate after a given date.

Paul,

Good thing you brought this up but many members seem to be rather uneasy about them MEMEs, including me. I just politely sidestep any that come my way.
