Sometimes the most exotic destinations are those that are closest to home!

Starr’s Mill in Fayette County Georgia by Richard WeisserThere are many awe inspiring destinations to see around the globe. Many an hour is spent carefully planning and making expensive travel arrangements to far off places in an effort to capture the sights and sounds of exotic destinations.

And in doing so, we often overlook the scenic treasures that are closest to home. Every locale has it local "spots" that define the region, and most of us drive past these landmarks every day without so much as a passing glance.

But that which is common in one region, is foreign in another, and with the miracle of digital photography and the Internet, we have the opportunity to visually share our communities with the world.

So do not hesitate to digitally document the local treasures within thirty minutes of your home, and display them for the online world to experience.

The additional exposure that you will get as a result of your efforts may surprise you!

Richard, we sometimes take where we live for granted because we may see or drive by these places every day. I can't tell you how many time I've driven past the White House, the Washington Monument or the Capital Building, and the Smithsonian Institute and associated museums. You're right, we don't have to travel far to see many great sights in our own back yard. Thanks.

I have a bad habit of over looking what's in my own backyard from time to time. I think it's just a part of human nature to go some where less familiar.

I live in what others call a resort town.  People come from all over the world to vacation here.  Funny, I think I have to leave to have a vacation.  It's a beautiful day on Cape Cod!

That is so true..... Born and raised in Houston and never visited NASA.  Lived in San Diego and went to the Zoo once.  Live now in Austin and have seen the 5 million bats take off once.  I did make the mistake by going to our Halloween bash with 100k people.  That won't happen again.  It is a amazing to see tourist come to your town to see certain things, yet we don't.  Don't know why, but that is odd..........

Richard - I am trying to put together a Bucket List of things that you should do if you live in Louisville. The sad part is there are a few that I haven't done.  One of my goals this year is to change that.

Hi Richard! Great post! You are right when you said "we often overlook the scenic treasures closest to home." Another wonderful photo... makes me reflect... LOL

I had to come back when I saw this quote on my United Country Website today - How appropriate

A person travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.

Richard, how apropos!  I was just talking with a friend who attended the inauguration. He was somewhat diappointed in that he didn't see all that he wanted to.  I was home, cozy and warm and saw great shots!  Being a Cancer, I love being home...so the idea that I can take shots right around here and share them with friends is a great idea!  Now, if I just had your talent........

Richard....indeed there are so many fun day or even half-day trips you can do around Atlanta and check out things. I've never been to Kennesaw Battlefield! And I've never been to the top of Stone Mountain!

We do so often overlook what's in our own back yard!

Often we're so busy with the day to day hustle we forget about the beauty all around us.  I know I've been guilty of that as well... then again I've taken some of my favorite pictures within a few minutes walking distance of my backyard!

Its not until someone is coming to visit that we take in the great sights that surround us.  It used to be that way when I lived in Jamaica too.  You take things for granted when you can get to them anytime.
