Property Tax Rates - What is yours? I would love to know!

Dear Agents,

I just had a letter to the editor published in the San Diego Union Tribune in response to another writer from a few days before.

He claimed that California was going to hell in a hand basket, was dirt broke and nothing compares to his idyllic days of growing up here in the late 1960s and 1970s.  He claims that our 1978 Proposition 13 ruined everything but taking away previous property tax dollars that were used for a million things that keep our state running. He was calling for a repeal of this very popular law.

My letter stated that I talk about property taxes every day and California's rate of 1% (plus some tiny bond measure add-ons per city or county), was a God send. The reason behind our sweeping property tax reform in 1978 had to do with the less fortunate getting taxed into the street. Assessor's offices were not honest, reassessments ran amok and it was all radically out of control.

When I explain to a homeowner what their property tax bill will be, they are shocked. It seems high to them! Then I tell them about Wisconsin or Texas and they get quiet.

Question: What is your property tax base? What do you tell your clients to expect? Is there a general "percentage" rule statewide for you or is every county in your state different?

I tell clients they should count on 1% for Arnold, then up to an additional .10 for bond measures that have been voted on.

In composing my letter it was actually hard to find state tax rates. My father in law in Texas pays about 3%.

Any education would be helpful.

Thank you!

P.S. my letter concluded that we'd have a revolution on our hands if this was repealed and we should try to spend a bit less.
