You may have heard that police in Los Angeles have finally caught the burglars who stole from the rich and famous - after three years of searching, 150 robbed homes, and $10 million worth of stolen valuables.
The burglars targeted the most exclusive homes in Bel Air, Pacific Palisades, and Beverly Hills, and according to the L.A. police, were absolute professionals. The stealthy thieves would wait until the residents went on vacation or out for the night, and carefully avoided high-tech security cameras and systems. They used lawn furniture and ladders to access the second storey of the homes, which generally do not have alarms. Soon after, they would escape with the valuables. Not once did they attack the homeowners.
While the "Hillside Burglars" did use sophisticated tactics, it was good old-fashioned DNA that got their ringleader caught in the end.
You may be wondering, "If rich people were getting robbed, with all their fancy cameras and alarms, how am I supposed to avoid it?" Well, there are a few things you can do.
For one, install security alarms on every floor of your home. The reason the burglars went uncaught for so long was because of their clever method of entering through the second floor. Motion detectors on the upstairs windows will also help. You may also want to consider a yard motion detector.
Keep your valuables out of sight or, even better, in a safety deposit box. If you're keeping it in a safe inside your home, add an alarm to the safe.
If you're going out of town or out for the night, keep some lights, music, or the TV on. Let your neighbors know you'll be away so that they can keep their eyes peeled.
Don't forget to keep your homeowners insurance policy updated with all your current valuables. If you do get robbed, this will help your carrier file your claim more quickly.
