Moving to Brevard County, Florida brings all sorts of new experiences. When visitors and new residents think of Florida's Space Coast they often first think of the Kennedy Space Center or Cocoa Beach. Was it not Cocoa Beach that was made famous in the 1960s television series, I Dream of Jeanie?

There are lots of other things to do here. With a 72 mile long coast line there are plenty of beaches for your enjoyment. If you are a fisherman, then try the Indian River Lagoon, Banana River or off-shore angling if you are the salt-water type. If your preference is freshwater fishing, there is plenty to choose from. You can take advantage of the St. Johns River, Lake Washington, Lake Poinsett and many other lakes. By the way, the story has it that the St. Johns River is only one of a few rivers that actually flows north.

Exploring all that Brevard County offers is an undertaking that can not be completed in a week (or two). Likewise, writing about all Brevard County, Florida offers will take more than one short article. Yes, Brevard County is "down south." You will find a slower pace of life I am sure. Having grown up in Florida and visited other southern locations I know that the pace is much slower in some other places! I guess it is a case of "How slow do you want to go?" With choice of so many communities within the Brevard County area, I am sure one will suit your pace of life! Here is a summary of some of the areas, in no particular order! You will find that most areas within Brevard County are referred to as South, Central or North County!

Barefoot Bay is located in the southern part of the County. This area is popular with retirees and, as we affectionately call them, snowbirds! Another nearby area is Grant-Valkaria. I believe at this time it is unincorporated but I believe incorporation has been discussed. Malabar and Palm Bay make up the remaining south Brevard areas. Palm Bay is the largest city within the County while Melbourne is probably the most well-known.

As you move into Central County you find the areas of North Melbourne, Suntree and Viera. Suntree and Viera, although not cities, are PUDs - planned unit development. Central county has a lot to offer for individuals who are working in Orlando or commuting frequently out of Orlando. Only about 45 minutes from Orlando, its attractions, and the Orlando International Airport, all the Central Brevard County locales are popular. Additionally, its only a 15 minute (or less) drive over to the beaches, or 20 minutes or so down Interstate 95 to Melbourne/Palm Bay or north to Titusville! Another great little city in in Central Brevard is Rockledge. Disclaimer: I am a little partial as I have lived there for the past decade! Interestingly I read somewhere that Rockledge is the oldest winter resort on the east coast of the United States, humm? I must admit I grew up 130 miles from Rockledge and never heard of it until I left the U.S. Navy in 1995.

Some northern parts of the County are more rural, such as the Mims area. Titusville is the largest city in north Brevard County. The population is somewhere around 45,000. A lot of the residents either work at the close by Kennedy Space Center or have retired from the Space Center. Also, because it is only about 25 miles to Orlando, lots of folks reside in T'ville and commute to Orlando.

There are lots of other communities within the Space Coast. I have not even touched on the "beach-side" or "Island" communities. I have not spoken of the Cape Canaveral area with its cruise terminals, resorts, and more! Along the coastline is Patrick Air Force Base as well!

Regardless of the lifestyle you seek, there is a community in Brevard County that will "fit your pace." Want to see local photos, take a look at what is available on www.Localism.com.
