Becoming Side Tracked...............................

Today was one of those days that I had planned to get some work done around the house.  Of course, if you look at the title of the blog, you know that didn't happen.  Some of you know that I work a grave yard job and worked until 6 this morning.  I intended to get up and by noon do some of the things that I need to get done.  I go in at 5 pm and work until 1 am on Saturdays.  To start with, I overslept, we should have replaced the alarm clock when ours broke a couple of weeks ago.

Then, after getting up and getting cleaned up, we decided that since we didn't have the chance to do a date night, we would go to lunch.  Great plan, the resteraunt parking lot was nearly empty and a large group of people exited the restaurant just as we were getting out of the car.  We were seated, and found that there had been a change in the menu since we had eaten last at this particular restaurant.  By the time we perused the menu and decided on what to eat, the restaurant had filled up.

While we were eating a client who chose to go into foreclosure over a short sale, called and wondered if we could check his home (he is an out of town owner), they had recieved a heating bill that was outrageous for an empty home.  After eating, we did just that, and found that the back door was wide open.  No wonder the gas bill was so high, they were trying to heat the great outdoors.

While returning to the house, the plastic skid guard on the car had come loose and aided by the wind began dragging as we drove down the road.  Talk about being embarrassed, every body looking at you as you drive the 4 to 5 miles back to the house.  To make a long story short, all I got done around the house was to remove the plastic skid plate from under the car, then I went to my insurance job.

I wonder how often in life this happens to us.  How often do we put off what we had planned for something that sounds better or is more urgent at the moment?  If you're like me, too often.  I have a Franklin planner that I try to use to plan my day, I guess that I just need to make better use of it!  Anyway, may all of you find a way to overcome the distractions and time robbers that divert your plans and derail your success!

Tony and Darcy, you are certainly not the only ones who get side tracked!  I have the attention span of a flea these days.

Tony I have to laugh.  I call this a stream of consciousness workday.  I start to tidy up my office, get sidetracked by a piece of paper, which reminds me of something that I need to do, which reminds me of somewhere I need to go...you get the idea.

I have recently put up a dry erase board in my bedroom.  (I'm a widow, so I can get away with it!)  I put it where I can see it before I go to bed and when I wake up.  I have several categories that require daily activities in order to achieve short term and long term goals.  These include real estate goals, personal development goals, writing goals, community service goals, etc.

I put a star next to each activity that HAS to be done the following day.  As I accomplish these activities, instead of erasing them, I replace the star with a happy face.  At the end of the day, I count the happy faces, then erase them and prioritize for the next day with stars.  Also, if I think of something just before bedtime, I add it to the list and go to sleep without worrying.

I find that replacing the stars with happy faces reinforces my "good behavior" and keeps me focused.  Before I check my email, run to the store, or return a phone call, I check my list to see how many stars I can convert first.  This has really helped me to focus rather than avoid tasks that may not always be enjoyable.  Sounds goofy, but it is working for me, after much hit and miss.

And since the board is attached to the wall, I don't worry about, "now where did I put my Franklin planner?  Oh it's out in the car.  As long as I'm going out to the car, I'll just run to the carwash..."

Thanks for sharing your day.  I secretly knew that I couldn't be the only one!
