Your washer and dryer accounts for more than six percent of your total energy consumption
Sacramento, CA - Public awareness on energy consumption has increased drastically due to the economy, rising energy costs and environmental issues. Gina had a lot to say about energy conservation as she shared some great tips.
Gina talked about saving energy in the laundry room by using cold water in the washer. Gina explained, "Cold water is just as effective in getting your clothes clean and it will help to prolong the life of your clothing while maintaining bright colors. It also helps to use shorter wash cycles for delicate and lightly soiled items."
People do not realize how much energy can be saved by turning down the water heater. Gina said, "Your water heater works constantly to maintain a tank full of hot water, day and night. Turning it down just 10 degrees will reduce energy consumption. It is also a good idea for safety, especially when there are children in the home who can be seriously burned if the water is running too hot."
Other tips Gina shared included insulating your plumbing and water heater, and repairing leaky faucets. If you should need to replace a faucet, choose one with energy saving features.
According to Gina Fazil, one of the most expensive appliances in the home is the clothes dryer. Gina talked about how a clothes dryer requires adequate air flow to operate safely and efficiently. Most people realize that a lint clogged dryer vent system is a fire hazard, but few think of it as a waste of energy. "When a dryer vent system is clogged with lint, it will cost an additional $18 - $24 per month to operate," said Gina. "Annual dryer vent cleaning, by a professional, is recommended to reduce energy consumption, prolong the life of your clothes dryer, and most importantly, reduce the risk of a dryer fire."
