It's okay to laugh. And to make others laugh.

We spend a lot of time in our profession trying to convey the "Professional Image".  Even here on Active Rain the majority of the posts are dedicated to very serious topics generally related to our industry.  And that's fine. I adhere to that mantra as well.

However, I think sometimes we lose sight of the humorous side of life.  I for one love to laugh.  And I love to make others laugh.  My business partner and I work hard and we work long hours.  We share an office.  Throughout the day we're constantly cracking jokes.  Not only does this silliness make us laugh, but it lifts the spirit.

We as salespeople read a lot of books about positive thinking and keeping our attitudes straight.  Personally I think one of the best ways to do just that is to stay light.  Meaning, have a sense of humor about all you do.  I'm not saying don't take things seriously, stuff needs to get done.  But just remember, it's not the end all be all.

On my Facebook profile I make it a point to post humorous quips on my profile update.  Sometimes people comment in a manner that I can tell they're taking me (and themselves for that matter) far too seriously.  But it's who I am.  To suppress that side of me would be being untrue to who I am.

Now, I try not to be offensive.  Sometimes racy, but never offensive.  There's a line there.  But one of my great satisfactions in this business is when I'm out with a new client and I crack the code.  Meaning I found their sense of humor.  Once I've got that all the stress vanishes.  Now we connect on a human level.  It's no longer Realtor/Client. It is now person to person.  And isn't THAT really what this all about?

So don't suppress your humor. Let it out. It's who you are.  And when you show that to people they feel a lot more comfortable dealing with you.

Jerry - I find that when I am myself, and relax, that my clients relax too.  Then, it is so much easier to build a relationship with them.  :)

Kudos to you for this post Jerry.  It's absolutely true that as hard as we work in this industry, it's actually critical to "just let go" on occasion and enjoy the comical side of life.  I believe my sense of humor with people is what puts them at ease and allows them to be themselves making relationships more powerful.  Thank you for sharing!

Laughter keep us from going insane especially now.   Humor can lighten up people and get them to work together.  I too have been thinking about posting more humor.  Lately I have just been posting market data.

Laughing always makes me feel better especially if I'm having a difficult day.  I don't know what I would do if everyone around me was serious all of the time!

Jerry, your right about keeping it light and having a sense of humor. Showing Clients as well as other professionals that you can laugh and take a joke  can only make you more appealing .

Along with humor, I try simply to be Pleasant, Polite, Personable, Positive, and Professional. I think people still like to interact with other people who are not automatons.
