Many Hearts Can Hurt In A Move: What a child thinks and sees through their eyes

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker

I found myself recently having to sit down with my son Spencer and telling him due to circumstances that were out of my control, and with all we recently went through that we had to move.

Perhaps sometimes a child's home is his domain. He knows everything, he loves everything, his daily rituals are mere routine. To tell him it was going to be easier on us because we did not need a three thousand square foot house seems almost meaningless to him. He asked if we were going to move back to our six thousand square foot house with the pool. I said" No honey, we need to maintain, and we need to get closer to things, and people that can help you if I cannot. He was receptive about possible making a geographic move soon. That would make things easier. It was hard explaining that "Bud" the parakeet, and "Shirley" the Hamster, as well as "Abby" our last Golden Lab needed to enjoy their long deserved rest. He knows that  Sometimes you have to say good bye to old friends, so one day we can say hello again.

In the end, the fish aquarium gets backed up, the seventy inch televisions, guitar hero, tons of memorabilia. Lastly Chance the Golden Lab and Lars the moose of a German Shepherd will jump in the car and we drive away.

Pictures are for catching moments but a memory will last forever in my mind. Fun, Joy, Caring,Sad, laughter, hurt, pain, illness, hope, reality, acceptance, memories, memories, memories. It's so sad to see Spencer hurt.Is it me?  Or does is my whole Universe revolve around a magnificent young man?

My friends ask me if I could take back time would I; it would have not mattered, it was out of my hands.

See you at closing!

Hmmmm...not sure what this means....progress is a good thing and I think that Spencer has more wisdom than most adults and sees things for the better...we know they will be.

Tom, my friend...I wish you all the luck over the next few trying months.  I am sure Spencer will be just fine with the move.  Did you figure out a plan for Lars?  I didnt know you had 2 dogs, or maybe I just read that wrong?  Not much sleep last night.  Let me know if I can help you with anything.  Take care!

When Looking to Buy or Sell - Make the Right Move

I am sorry about you moving.  Life is full of change and I think; while it may be difficult for children; learning to deal with change is a very healthy thing for a child.  It will make him stronger and more prepared for life.  Plus with all the love around him; how bad could a move be?

Best Wishes my friend.

Tom,

Your son will actually probably be more easily able to adapt to change, that is a side benefit of relocating.  Think of it as a new adventure on your new journey.  Best of luck to you.

Tom, kids are very resilient due to their youth, so I think Spencer will be fine. Relationships, not houses or where you live is as important. He has the most valuable thing - YOU!!!

Thanks. We all have each other and even though I get down on him about getting his home work right I wouldn't change that.

Tom - I sincerely wish that things work out for the best.  I moved 6 times before I graduated from high school and there are 2 things I can tell you.  One - move DURING the school year, if you are changing schools.  That way Spencer will be plunged right into a whole group of kids and have lots of opportunities to make friends before the summer.  Secondly - every place has something special.  In one place we lived it was the swim team, another the marching band.  And yes - he will bounce back.  Good luck.
