Is Your Wall Color More Important Than Your Best Friend? ... True Story in the Life of an Interior Designer

I was on my initial visit to a client's residence meeting with his Personal Assistant. She was interviewing me and setting up the parameters of what the client wanted. There was plenty of latitude in the various projects the client wanted to accomplish and he was open to any recommendations I might make. But when it came to his dining room, there were two large original paintings done by his best friend, a professional artist. Here was the edict ... "you can do pretty much anything you want in here, BUT YOU CAN'T MOVE THOSE PAINTINGS". Not negotiable! He was very specific about that ... adamant ... made sure that she reminded me a couple times.

Okay, I prepared my materials and recommendations and met with her again a few days later. With regard to the dining room, as you can see from the "before" photo, it was painted a very strong blue, which did nothing to enhance the paintings which were all in brown tones. They just didn't pop against that blue wall. So, of course my recommendation here was that we repaint the dining room to a color that would showcase those oh-so-cherished paintings. The answer I got?

"Okay, you can move the paintings."

LOL ... Well, I guess he really loved those blue walls!

Not a problem. We bought beautiful new paintings and moved the friend's paintings into another very good spot in another room.

Enjoy the before and after photos. You can see this room and more of my work at Pangaea Interior Design.
