Taxed Enough! Evidently not in Red Hook.

NYSAR’s Government Affairs Department reported this week that…

The Red Hook transfer tax was approved by 31 votes - With 2,629 votes cast, a significant turnout for such a small community, Red Hook residents approved a 2 percent real estate transfer tax by a mere 31 votes on Tuesday, May 1. NYSAR and the Dutchess County Board of REALTORS were extremely active in opposing this proposal over the past several months and though we did not prevail, there are numerous lessons to take away from this effort. Those in support of the measure likely spent between $50,000 and $100,000 while NYSAR allocated $20,000 from its Issues Mobilization Fund to oppose the measure.

Comments from an article in Wednesday’s Poughkeepsie Journal show that NYSAR’s message of “enough is enough taxes” resonated with Red Hook voters. We learned much about the tactics of the pro-tax forces that will certainly be a great benefit as we move forward and address future transfer tax and mortgage recording tax proposals.

Judging by results, “enough is enough taxes” evidently did not resonate enough in Red Hook.
Better luck with the Hudson Valley Community Preservation Act of 2007.

There seems to be a trend in tax strategies going on in NY that is forcing middle to low income property owners to sell and move away.Much of the support for this increase in taxes comes from wealthy,ultra-eviro nazis. They want to take everyones land and have trails cut through  so that all of the nuts from NYC can come and traipse through the woods on a Sunday afternoon.Red Hook was one example.

Listening to your Needs
Come on down to New Orleans, we have been complaining about a $375 transfer tax for 10 years. My property taxes are about three hundred per year. The weather is always warm, people nice and great food. You can e-mail your work back and enjoy a slower lifestyle. Hows that for an ad.

Too bad that increase went through with just those few votes.  I'm in Solano County, CA and the highest transfer tax we have here is just 4,4%.  Other parts of CA can be as high as 6 to 7%. I'm curious, what is the total tax if the increase was 2% ?

Linda, Amazing that it passed w/ that few votes. Riverhead just had a referendum for a new firehouse for $15,000,000. Only 700 or so voters showed up.  It passed, and I know all the firemen turned out for the vote.  Now the taxpayers of Riverhead get to foot the bill.

Sean - I am amazed at what can happen when only a few people vote.  15 million is a lot of money for what I'm guessing is a small town to pay.  One of our most recent elections had the mayor win with less than five votes.  It just goes to show you how important it is to get out there and speak your piece.

Sean - Thanks for sharing the article.  Without knowing all of the particulars, it sounds like it might not be too bad for the townsfolk if they sell the other property to help offset the costs.  The area I live in also has a 20 year bond that was a bitter pill to swallow, but we've gotten used to it now and it's not so bad.  Hang in there!
