Do you need a cat nap?

I do not work in an office like most of you do. I do most of my work in the homes of others. But, I do have a small home office where I write reports and come up with new marketing ideas for my small business. Today, in my business mold, is Marketing Monday. What is that? On the first Monday of each month, I send out my monthly newsletter to people in the real estate and related businesses in my area. I write several drafts of throughout the month, and when Marketing Monday rolls around it is ready to go.

Another thing I do on Marketing Monday is make contact with at least three new  people that are involved somehow in Real Estate. This can be a Realtor, banker, contractor, attorney, anyone involved in Real Estate.

I was off to a great start this morning. I had my newsletter completed and would be starting to send it out shortly. I had a collection of names and people I wanted to contact. I started on the new contacts first. I don't usually do this, because I do not consider it one of my strong points, so I push it off as long as I can. But, I ended up talking to five new people that may or may not help me, or that I can help in the future. So, things were going very well for me, I thought.

Then, I decided to do some web surfing, checking out AR, and other assorted message boards and forums. This took about an hour. When I finished that up, I had to go drop off some business cards and a home inspection report for a few Realtors in the area. I was home before noon, just in time to make some lunch.

Once lunch was finished, it was time to get working on my e mailing. I sat down and skimmed over my monthly message. I read it three times and it just screamed blah blah blah back at me. So, I decided it needed a re-write. I tried for about an hour, but was coming up empty. Now, I am just getting ornery, because I want these to be sent out this evening, so they are read first thing tomorrow morning. I send them out on a timer on Monday, but they don't actually go until Tuesday morning, but that's not the matter at hand.

I had writers' block. Not a big deal to most. But, when you write your own newsletters, and this is such a huge part of how you do business, it is devastating. Then, my cat came and curled up on my lap. GREAT! now, I have to come up with a new letter quick, and work around the cat. After another half hour, I decided to take a small break. When I came back, the cat was still sleeping in my chair(she claims it's hers, but anyway).

I thought this was a great idea. I went to the living room, and just laid down for about fifteen minutes and recharged. When I came back, the cat was still here, but I was ready to write another newsletter. I pounded it out in about fifteen minutes. I think it may be my best yet. Now, I will let it sit until later, so I can proof it a few more times. Yes, that means I will have to "work" later this evening, but that's okay. My newsletter will be out tomorrow morning, and I will feel much better knowing it wasn't garbage. Once I am happy with it, I will send it out, and all my subscribers will read it first thing tomorrow morning.

Anybody else out there take cat naps, power naps, or what you may call them? I have found in the past, that this can greatly improve your productivity, and creativeness.

Do we have any nappers out there?

I am if I have the time.  It is important to recharge.  I schedule no more than 2 inspections per day, so sometimes I have an hour in the middle.

Ian there are somedays that I want to take a nap too. I find that about 20 minutes with a load iPod does the trick. I have a few cats too, but it is my girl Boston terrier that claims every spot I occupy!

Jack-that is a good strategy, no use in oevrdoing it right?

David-Find what works for you and use it as you cat nap. Some like music, some like quiet.

I wish I could take power naps but unfortunately if I lay down and actually get to sleep I usually wake up feeling more tired then before.  I do however, love your idea of Marketing Monday.  That is great.  I think I am going to have to add that to my schedule.  Marketing is defiantly one of my weak points.  Which is not a good thing when business is slow. Thanks for the idea!

Marie-I have been making this part of my regular schedule for the last twelve months. I set aside the first Monday of every month just for this purpose, and then another day mid-way through the month as well. It seeems to be paying of, as I am much more focused on marketing to those days. Good luck.

Ian, I can relate to writing the newsletter, I have been writing my own for almost two years now .  Just as the writing part got better I decided to start emailing them instead of snailmailing... now I feel obligated to write an intro message in the email.

What a lovely idea. Of course a lot of European Countries take a "nap" every mid afternoon.

Yes, enough cannot be said for those power naps.  I don't get to every day anymore, but there was a short time there, that me and my best friend, my cocker spaniel would catch a little snooze.

Silvia-I have started writing an intro into mine as well. I break it down into groups, and send a personalized message to each group, so it doesn't have that mass e-mail feel to it.

Ellie- I wish I had time to take a snooze EVERY afternoon. Nothing like geting a little boost.

Donna-I have a few friends that feel the need to accompany me when I get the chance for a power nap also.

Ian, sometimes you just have to slow down and recharge your batteries. That way you come back refreshed and ready to go.
