Obama's Payback

By

In previous blogs I have questioned the intelligence and morality of President Obama and Congress. I still do but I think I understand better what he is doing.

Coming off a very high approval rating and the excitement of his inauguration, I believe Obama is just paying off his political debts while the hysteria will allow him to.

This so called Stimulus bill is just a frenzy of funding for a myriad of liberal / Democrat causes (Dept. of Education. Climate Research, aid to poor families, etc...) I believe now, that Obama thought that during the maelstrom of Obama hysteria and praise that he could slip this bill by without many people taking notice. This bill basically pays back all his political debts to those that helped get him elected in one fell swoop.

In addition, his nomination of Tom Daschle may be another political payback. I don't know if Daschle did anything to help President Obama get elected, but I would guess that he did and that this nomination is Obama just fulfilling a promise. Quid pro Quo, if you know what I mean. I am sure that Obama's team found out about Daschle's tax issues before it became public, however they still thought that they may be able to cram him through Congress and the public may not get too upset.

All Presidents pay off political debts when they reach office, this is nothing new. It is the scale and audacity that is new. This stimulus bill probably not only pays past debts but puts the whole of Congress (sans the Republicans) in debt to the President. The size of the paybacks is ludicrous and is not a on time thing. Once gotten, money is rarely given back by Politicians. These spending increases will continue.

It is just supposition on my part, but if I am right, then we know that "Change we can believe in" is a bunch of bullshit like we all thought it was and Obama is just another dirty politician. I hope that I am wrong.

Chris,

The only thing which are think you are wrong about is that you are downplaying it. Wait until he has to start paying back the foreign contributors. I,m surprised he hasn't made William Ayers head of homeland security. I am yet to be convinced that he has the good of the country as his agenda.

Sold down the river of liberal spending and promises that can never be kept. That is, without bankrupting the country.

Chris - good post.  But did you really mean this bill is paying back all his political debts in one "fell swoop?"  I think it's more like one SWELLED FOOP!  :-)

Daschle is gone!  Obama admits mistake! Headlines on Fox News right now!  Ahh, I'll dwell in this small victory as long as I can because I'm sure it may be a while before we win anything again.  Polls show public support for his executive orders - the Mexico City law and closing Guantanimo are less than majority!  He is spending his capital, it could run out before he realizes it!

WOW, why do you all keep forgetting, this stimulus nonsense was started by bush?  Selective memory loss can be a good thing if you don't want to own up to what the  GOP has done to this country.

Obama sees this crisis as an opportunity to pass the type of legislation that he wants to pass, period.

The bill has very little to do with economic stimulus and a lot to do with spending and pet projects.

They could throw anything in this bill, call it stimulus, and have Congress sign off on it.

I heard a great comparison today and learned a little history about the 1925 world series.

Obama was compared to Roger Thorpe Peckinpaugh. You may be asking who in the heck is Peckinpaugh. That is what I asked myself.

Peckinpaugh won the League Award in the American League . After winning the League award in the 1925 World Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Peckinpaugh committed eight errors in the seven-game series, contributing to the Pittsburgh victory. The Pirates become the first team in a best-of-seven Series to overcome a 3-1 Series deficit to win the championship. This was not out of character for Roger; he had the second-worst fielding percentage since 1910 of players with at least 1900 games played.

Get the point!!

Terry,

You are correct. Bush gave money straight to the banks and I hated that. I was, and still am, against any sort of government intervention. The point is that it doesn't matter what Bush did now because we can't stop it anymore. We can stop this though and that is why it is important to debate it.

In addition, this bill is laden with pork and is misleading and it is second. It matters that it is second because Obama has the luxury of seeing how the first "Stimulus" worked. You would think he would know better now. Right or wrong, Bush did not have that luxury or forethought.

The bigger point is that you seem to take more pleasure in pointing fingers and proving your side knows better than in really analyzing the problem at hand. In short, you are still happier with partisan politics than smart politics. I hate to say that it is people like you, on both sides of the aisle, that ruin this country. People who can't see past their party line. I have railed against others on this site for the same thing.

Let's just be thoughtful decent Americans rather than Republicans or Democrats. That is how they are controlling us all. Conquer and divide, conquer and divide.
