Appreciating the darkness before the dawn.....

Its so great that feeling you get when you first start out with something, it has that new freshness that gives us hope that great things are to come and what we see is the potential something has and to us the possibilities could be endless.  As we go along those paths and sometimes we aren't seeing immediate response, the newness starts wearing off, it is easy to get discouraged and let ourselves feel that brightness start to get a little foggy. As the lights of our "hope" start getting dim its harder to see all those "endless possibilities" we had such high expectations for.

When we are focused on the things that AREN'T happening, we cannot appreciate the things that ARE happening.  The little things that sneak under the radar that are the turning points that eventually lead to great change! Lets not take out any of the rungs on our ladder just to get there faster, it just makes it harder to get there. We need to appreciate every step we take in the right direction, no matter how small it is.  Small steps will eventually lead to higher ground.  When things you once saw potential in are now distant specs of light...think of all the things you go through to get there as tools that will help us embrace what is to come.  Just because we think we are emotionally and physically prepared for something, doesn't mean we are mentally ready for it.  We need each and every step.

When you think you have nothing left to be grateful for,  there is ALWAYS something.....could be oxygen... freedom..... even curling up on the couch and watching your favorite "feel-good" movie, you can always find something because just when you think it can't possibly get any darker....the sun HAS to come up.

Very positive reminder and words to center us.  We do need to understand that we may have disappointments but there are so many treasures of life that we should be celebrating and grateful.  Focus to continue and not let up and to keep perspective that all details add up.  Thanks for the reminders.

Hi Bob,

You are so right -when we look around at all we DO have and start appreciating even the smallest things, we bring positive things into our lives.

My brother recently told me of a friend of his that was so negative that he couldn't see the light for the shadows. Nothing would make him see the glass half full. Finally, my brother went to visit the man in his beautiful home for a wonderful dinner with the man's loving wife and great kids. He passed a nice SUV and a boat on the way in the front door. After dinner, he invited his friend to talk privately in the kitchen, and took 2 chairs from the table.

He set them next to the cupboard where the trash was and set the trash container between the two of them. Next, to his friend's horror, he proceeded to comb through the trash, picking up pieces of garbage, making disgusted faces and saying "eww look at this".

Well, his friend thought he was crazy of course and asked him why he was doing this. My brother replied that he thought his friend would want to talk about the trash in his life again, as he always did every time they spoke, and the kitchen was the perfect place for it. He told him that with all the wonderful things his life held for him, he was focusing on the "trash" in his life, and not appreciating the positive, wonderful things around him that should make his life more joyful..

The man now has a different perspective and a more positive attitude.

My point? Focus on the positives in your life, not just the trash!
