You will never quite forget the first time that you experience a hard drive crash. I was working late, getting ready to leave for vacation the following day, and I suddenly heard a clunking sound emanating from my laptop. This cannot be good, I thought. Surely enough, within 10 minutes I was staring at the dreaded "blue screen of death". The system would not reboot. The hard drive, for lack of a better word to describe it, was toast. I had client transactions that needed to move forward, but now access to my data was gone.
It pays to have Plan B. For me, that is Iron Mountain Connected Backup for PC. The Connected software automatically scans my laptop each night for files that need to be backed up, and uploads them to a secure server. No need to spend time manually backing up files (what happens when you forget to make that backup, huh?), swapping disks, or fumbling for thumb drives. Unlike other backup solutions that I have tried, and I have tried quite a few, the speed is excellent for both backup and recovery. This is key. I was able to quickly set up the software on another system and start the recovery process for the files that I needed right away. I also had access to all of my files through the iRoam interface which is accessible from any web browser anywhere in the world. The service literally saved the day.
Plans are available starting $8.95 per month to backup 2GB of data all the way to $59.95/month to backup 50GB of data. A 30-day free trial is available for all plans except for the 30 and 50GB plans. For more information, visit http://backup.ironmountain.com. You simply cannot afford to implement some type of system to backup your data and protect your assets.
On another note, ever since that little crash incident, I have become a firm believer in the use of software as a service (SaaS) and remote access technologies. I will discuss these in future articles.
