Nature abhors a vacuum…a reason for staging?

No, not that vacuum.

But I may have found a reason that we all collect so much clutter.  It’s actually quantum mechanics.  Nature abhors a vacuum and will fill the void.

Is that the reason we collect knick knacks?  It that the reason we stack papers on the desk rather than inside drawers?  Are we actually helping nature fill space?

As stagers are we actually going against nature to declutter?  That could explain a lot.

Well here’s another idea that’s more comforting.  The vacuum idea is in perfect conflict with one of the principles of feng shui that tells us that clutter blocks the flow of chi in a space.

As stagers we are actually creating more balance, harmony and sense of belonging when decluttering a space.

Could it be that we’re creating vacuums that buyers sense a desire to fill…

"Creating a vacuum that buyers sense a desire to fill...".  That is a unique take on it! When they see the cleared and decluttered space, they subconsciously want to fill it with their stuff! Pictures, treasures, collectibles, etc.  Yes, we want to create a space they can see themselves in. With their stuff! Interesting concept, and you are probably right.

Sheridan, Great post.  We often see decluttering as a way to LET things in...new energy or new prospective buyers.  Home staging relates so closely to Feng Shui--we may look at things a little differently but the same goals apply.

Peg - I'm glad this makes sense to someone else!

Carole - I hadn't thought about the letting things in perspective, but you're absolutely right.

Cheryl - We are always working to change client's minds, aren't we?

Oh I love that! I think you are really on to something!

It still amazes me that the instant I clear off a space, the next person to come along --- my husband --- puts something down on it! Who knew this law could work so well for staging? LOL
