Blogging For Blondes!?

By
Real Estate Agent with Pine Knoll Shores Realty NCRE# 242843

I need your help!  I am currently serving as President of the Crystal Coast Chapter of WCR.  In December, at our governing board planning retreat, someone suggested that we have a program called Blogging for Dummies.  I said, "That is a great idea, does anyone have a suggestion on who we should ask to present that program"?  Dumb me (I am a blonde by the way), because they all agreed that I would be the best person to teach blogging to our local members.  "You are the best" they all said, "You're a gen-xer" they all cheered....."Please, Please, Please"!  How could I say no?

The program will be held on March 25th, so I still have time to put together a wonderful program, with lots of tips and instruction for blogging.  I have already started working on my powerpoint, and have covered the basics, but I want to give them something to write home about.

While asking my BIC for suggestions on my "Blogging For Dummies" presentation, she sarcastically said, "Why don't you just write a blog asking for help"?

That's It....I will Ask my fellow activerainers for help!

Not a day goes by in my life where I don't hear myself saying, "I read in this blog today..."  whether to clients, friends or coworkers.  Blogging has become a big part of my life, and I absolutely love Activerain.  But how do I share that with 40 - 50 other people and get them excited about blogging?

What I need, is any suggestions, ideas, tips, instructions, whatever you think may be great for a presentation on Blogging For Dummies.  I would like to send them all home with a folder full of helpful and educational materials so that they will become great bloggers in the future.  I want them to WANT to blog.

Hello Amy.  I did NOT say it sarcastically. But your blog is great and I think you'll get lots of ideas from our friends in the rain.  Good luck.  I'll be there to see your presentation and I hope all our other members will show up with friends for such a great presenter.  Good Luck!

Oh, I can't help with ideas for blogging because you taught me everything I know about blogging but you might want to forward this blog to all our local members.

Amy,

The first thing that people need to know about blogging is that you have to be patient and consistent.  It's not a 'turnkey' kind of thing with quick results.  I talk to so many people who give up after a month or two.

Hi Amy,  I've never taken a class on it, and I am just learning - but I am learning by reading what other people write- maybe a good idea would be to send a featured post to them ( one you like the best) Everyday---starting March 1, by the time the class starts they will already have some great ideas, but then just need some structure on how to implement their thoughts?

Sheldon Neal wrote a great post for Newbies, that may help too... I'm sure a lot more people will give you great ideas here.

Don't try to be someone you're not. Too many people try to be one person face-to-face and another person on the Internet.

Mary,  I love the idea of sending them a post everyday.  It will give them an idea of what they can accomplish and learn by blogging!

Chris and Karen,  Great tip.  I did give up after a few weeks, came back a few months later, now I can't stop.  I learn something new everyday. Thank You.

Russel,  I always try to be myself, but I will certainly take your advice and be me during my presentation.  I just don't want to forget all of the best and most important things about blogging.  By being me, I will remind them all that I am NO EXPERT.

Amy,  Mary's idea is wonderful.  That will quickly show them how much is available by social networking.  I too gave up only not after a couple of months but after a couple of days.  Then you kept saying look at this and I had to come come back.  Now I don't know if I could start or end a day without Active Rain.  You'll do great at your class.  You may even discover a new avocation!

Thanks Marian.  Mary's Idea is great.  I have also received several emails from fellow activerainers with some great ideas and tips.

Amy, when I first started getting into the blog thing, I didn't know where to start, what to say, or how to even create a blog.

I found this site and it really helped me get going.

Why Blog?

The funny thing about the site is the first tip. Looking at the picture you posted, I see you're well on your way to a great presentation!!!

Amy, Yes I too agree with be yourself first and foremost. And keep posting. At first I felt like I struggled to come up with something to "blog" about. Now I see more opportunities for blog topics than I have time to implement. Also a good suggestion is to start carrying around you digital camera to share images. LIKE THE ONE YOU POSTED HERE - a good photo can take a blog to the next level. Can't wait for the March presentation!!!!
