Ice Damming and Heavy Snow Loads

By

This winter has not been kind to roofs, particularly here in Maine. I am sure other parts of the country are feeling it too...

We are seeing an unprecendented amount of snow and ice on roofs. the Ice damming is 4-8" thick or more on some homes. When this ice freezes, it backs moisture up under the shingles, ultimately into your attic, ceilings and walls... causing staining, rot and potentially MOLD...

Get out there now and rake or shovel your roofs...

The added weight can cause structural damage as well... especially if the load is compounded by rain which was threatened this week.

If you cannot get out there yourself, ask a friend or family member... or if you can, hire someone to get up there and clean it off... do some research, make sure they are insured.

Here is a roof from yesterday... raked AFTER the damming and moisture penetration has started:

recently raked roof with lots of snow and ice

ohh... that is asphalt shingles under that ice in case you were wondering!

Here is a look at the attic inside:

water is pouring in, leaking down the bedroom walls below...

We had a warm day yesterday and I hope that everyone took advantage of the weather and cleaned up some of their roofing issues. We are in for a nother deep freeze and the icing will occur again! Good luck everyone!
