Voted the 3rd Best Place to live by D Magazine, Highland Village lies on the south side of Lewisville Lake in Denton County, one of the state's fastest-growing counties. Until recently, the city has remainsed primarily residential. Highland Village was also chosen as a winner of a Texas Municipal League (TML) Excellence Award and, according to FBI statistics, ranked as the safest city of its size in North Texas for five years in a row. Highland Village hosts a Balloon Festival every year, attracting 30,000 visitors. The city's Inland Trails System is a multi-use trail for walking, jogging and cycling.
Highland Village was home to about 100 owners of weekend lake houses prior to being incorporated in 1963. The first development in Highland Village was concentrated around the shores of Lake Lewisville. Ranch land owned by Robert DuVall, the city's first mayor, made up the remainder of the city at the time. Between 1975 and 1985, the population grew from 1,000 to 5,000.
