Kids These Days

By
Home Inspector with Square One Home Inspection

As I was filling my truck with gas the morning, I saw the most pathetic display of disrespect. I watched a woman pull in to fill her car also. She had her kids strapped in the back, and one was screaming to high heaven.

She filled her car, and went inside to pay. Why not just use the swiper on the pump? But, anyway. While she was inside, her son got out of the vehicle. Once out, he decided to go sit on the curbing in front of the store.

The woman came out and saw him sitting there, and told him to get  back in the car. He said no, I'm not going, blah, blah, blah. She told him again, and he just flipped out on her. This boy couldn't have been any more than 5 years old. He was calling her names that would make a sailor blush.

I watched this for a few minutes, and went to leave. I decided I had to see the result of this incident. Actually, I had had enough. I walked over and asked  her if she needed some assistance, and she said no. So, I let it go and went to leave. I then saw a man around 50 or so pick the boy up, and put him back in his carseat, and have a word with the child.

I don't know what he said to the boy, and I don't care. That boy immediately fell silent and stared straight ahead. I honked my horn and waved at the man. I was proud of  him.

I waved at the woman, who was quite embarassed, and left. I know parents have a lot going on, but how can you let your children be in charge at that age? You are the adult.

I hope whatever that man said keeps that boy in line for a long time. I would like to say thanks to that guy. Thank You for showing some back bone and letting that boy know who the boss is.

And lady, I hope you stand up to your child and reinforce this mans' message. Good luck.

Ian:  I had neighbors with eight kids like this.  It was a nightmare.  Everyday there was drama.  And sometimes the drama came across the street.  If ours, or the neighbors, garage was open, whatever was inside was fair game.  I caught them taking the neighbors bike for a spin.  I asked the neighbor if she had decided to give her bike away.  She was shocked.  These kids had walked into her open garage and taken her bike to ride.  There seems to be ZERO discipline for kids these days.  I'm almost glad I don't have any.  I would hate to have to undo all the negative influence of their friends and classmates.

I decided a long time ago that I can't fix the world.  I might be able to help with some of the repairs.  Things are so different from when I grew up and I don't understand the people that let it get that way.  Now that I sound completely like my father and grand father I'll shut up.

Ian, if you would like I could arrange for you to make a visit to my wife's job and observe for a few hours.

She teaches 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Spanish at a middle school in Virginia Beach. You would need a full weekend of fishing to reclaim your sanity.

Hi Ian - So nice to put a face with the name - You clean up nice!!!!!!!!!!!! Still love the pooch pic. When reading your post, that new show on TV "What Would You Do" comes to mind. What a great thing that man did for that boy and his mother. I wonder if she realizes and hopefully the young boy will get more of that - Perhaps he really needs a strong figure in his life. That is the sad part of the story - Perhaps he is reacting to something he needs.... just a thought...

Lynn-I agree, sometimes you need a sdtranger to point out your downfalls or behavior.

Gwenn-I will have to look up that show. And, it really is amazing what a little shave will do for a guy, hey? Thanks for stoppping by.

Ian, the parents have to be in charge and demand respect from their children. It would have been a very different ending to the story if someone had snatched the little boy from outside the store!
